2001 Mk III Type 6N2 Headlight Replacement

Featured Replies

Hello all,

My problem is fairly simple really; I need to replace the headlight bulbs. I have searched on the internet and on this forum, but haven't come across any helpful results.

Does anyone have a guide/know how to do it? Is it a case of taking the bumper off, or have you got to take the battery & fuel filter out?

Thanks in advance,

why the helll would you need to take the fuel filter out?

See if you can undo the plastic cover on the back as it is, if you can, great! ( i could on mine when it had standard headlights )

If not , bumper off!

If it's just replacing the headlight bulbs it's simples, providing it's not the gti, just open the bonnet, on the back of the lights there's black plastic covers, slide of the clips on those, lift it out, then you can just unclip the bulbs from the retaining clips, unplug the bulbs, and replace working backwards ;)

hope that's it, and I haven't misread the question

Wow, thanks for the quick reply.... I have tried the clips behind though, you can't get too them though.

If its not a GTi, then you shouldnt be taking anything off. Its a simple matter of uncliping the metal clip on the outside, taking the plastic cover off, and taking out the bulb. If its a GTi, you dont need to take the bonnet off. Theres a guide on tigerstyle.co.uk/phpBB3/ that shows you how to do it. You need a stubby phillips screw driver, has to be a stubby because youve got little space to work with. The gist of it all, you take off both indicator housings, then theres three screws on each headlight cluster that needs to be removed. You also need to move the battery around; it'll all make sense. Have a look at the guide though, as it'll show u the placements of the screws that you need to unscrew :)

It is just a normal polo... not the GTI.... just didn't seem easy that's all to get to the back of the headlamps... i'll give it another shot tomorrow. Thanks for your help.
