it was very low on petrol so i thoret its run out so i went to petrol station and got a jerry can full and put it in

still wont start so i checked over the basic stuff and i found the problem

No spark

and the fuel is at the the spi unit but the injector isnt fireing any fuel in

I'm unsure on this but i dont think vw put a imobliser on as standard

I've checked all the fuses and there fine

its a mk4 but its the very early model engine becuse its same setup as my old mk3

so i thoret one of you guys may be able point me in right direction

any help whould be gr8 cheers

when you say body work do you mean welding??

  • Author

No just painting i whould off disconnected battery if i was welding

cheers jon

ah ok i was working on the mig-cooked ecu theory

have you checked you are getting an LT from the hall effect switch on the dizzy? you will get no sparks on injection without it

  • Author

i have checked it direct from the plug on the bottom of the coil block theres no power going to it all

I'm starting to think its the ecu :-(

thanks =]

Start from the plug and work backwards. Then hopefully when you get your power if you do. then it will be the last part you checked.

hang on, the live terminal on the coil block (pin 3) comes straight off the x contact via a fuse or from the fuel pump relay(depends on which injection setup it has) , so long as the ground is connected (pin1) you should still get a fluctuating LT on pin 2 irrespective of wether the ecu is plugged in or not...

try bridging pin 3 over to the battery + temporarily to see if you get anything out of it

ohh good ill go try that now thank you

as well i won an ecu last night for 21pound just in case it is if it isnt then its a spare lol

thank you your a big help =]

Right ecu arrived today put it on still nothing I'm close to giveing up here :-(

still think it's more likely to be a distriibutor issue to be honest

hi again got a proper tester today and I'm getting power to both injector and coil pack but no signal on theme

i went to scrap yard today for the sensor inside the dizzy and hes said 20quid and i didnt have that much on me but is that not a bit steap ?

(but it was for the houseing as well can you not remove the sensor out of it i didnt want to brake it as I'm heavey handed lol ?

you can remove the hall sender from the dizzy but it's a horrible fiddly job, you need to knock out the roll pin that holds the drivegear on, then dismantle the whole thing.... you can buy a whole new distributor brand new with complete with rotor arm and cap for less than £40 off ebay

When your turning it over, is everything cranking? as though its trying to fire up but getting no fuel?

is your fuel sender primimg when you set your key to first stage /electrics?

  • Author

yes the fuel pump is working and theres fuel at the injection unit it

but the injector wont fire fuel in and theres no spark at all

and yeh its spining over fine

I'm bidding on a full dizzy on ebay at the moment which I'm hopeing is the problem

make sure you get the right type though, the bosch ones have an orange dizzy cap, the magnetti-marelli ones have a black dizzy cap

Yeh i went over a newer polo with a fine tooth come in the scraper yestrday and noticed it had a black dizzy and it seemed a bit longer so i got the one off with the orange dizzy but he said £20 with out dizzy and roter so i told him stick it where sun dont shine and i won a full one this morning for £10 with P&P and thats orange dizzy and its ADX same as mine hope its this now lol

thanks for advice people :-D

try this one...........it WILL be the ignition switch on the back of the barrell, these cost about £7:00 and once you have one (GSF or Europart) then take the cover off the steering column and pull the block connector off the back of the ignition swich, leave ignition key in lock as imobaliser will still need to read the code, connect new switch to wiring and turn with a screwdriver (as if you were a car thief) and heh presto........ trouble is to actually change it you will have to remove the whole ignition lock from the coloumn to get to the stupid screw that holds it in and for that you will need a puller to get it off the coloumn.............

how do i know this? i sold a polo to a mate and it did the same thing with all the symptoms you describe and i changed everything on the car and after three days and a computer and a head scratching Merc mechanic we worked it out as a last resort..........

let me know if i'm right

p.s my mates garage has changed said switch on about a dozen Vw's over the last couple of years

Hi pal i broke my dizzy anyway becuse I'm heavy handed lol

so when my new comes ill put it on and then i will try that =]

i didnt even think it had an immobliser

and i also noticed when i turn igntion on and then off to turn stero on (without pulling the key out) the stero goes off and i have keep it on position one to listen to stero

oh dear why didnt i relise that could be part the problem

cheers everyone

if the ignition switch was stuffed you wouldn't get any power to the x-contact, and the hence the fuel pump relay could not be energized. the starter solenoid comes off terminal 87 on the ignition switch too so it wouldn't crank over if that was bust...

i'm not saying 100% that it is not the ignition switch block at fault, it is a common fault for them to break. but personally i find it unlikely in this case

well the dizzy unit should be here monday so hofully thats the problem dont belive theres only one sensory on the cam no crank lol

:?

still think that's the problem as mine had fuel and all that was missing was power to the coil......

I'm starting to think monsta is right

my friend said why does all the igntion lights go off while cranking and i thoret it was normal and then i had a good think

and its not lol

so I'm thinking when i crank it my igntion aint on!

so if my new dizzy mec does fail it I'm draging it round the block with igntion on lol :-D
