Model: 1990 mk2 CL

Engine: Genuine 36k 1272cc

Suspension: Bog

Brakes: Bog

Wheels and Tyres: 13" Skinny Steels

Exterior Styling: None

Interior Styling: hah

ICE and Security: casette deck, can be opened with spoon

Comments: Aquired my Grans 1990 Mk2 Polo estate 1.3 CL. Its under 36k with genuine stamped VW history up to 34k from Mart Road VW garage in Minehead where the car was originally bought back in 1990 (still has dealer sticker in window) My gran was the second owner & I'm now the third. Its spotless inside as youd imagine, the outside has a few dinks & a few rust bubbles the worst being the drivers door bottom edge (you can see as black spots where I've put rust stop on). Overall shes a good clean example with plenty of miles left. She starts and goes just like a new car and the little 1272c engine flies, very nippy! Its currently running on its original 13" steelies with good tyres all round.

next job was to drop it.... went for German kit off gaybay £130 notes, 60mm all round me thinks.....dead easy to fit and was surprisingly great quality for price. Had to swap 175/65/13s Avons back to skinny 145/75/13's bit too much arch rubbing... Removed mudflaps too as they dragged!

didnt like the common Tarantula's so decided to look for new rims, fancied ATS but wanted something a bit different. I also like running on skinny rims...

I managed to pick up these 5 genuine Mk1 Scirocco GLS rims of fleabay for a £1... yes thats right £1

BgcgPLwmkKGrHqYOKioErzMydvEBLFWJdBs.jpg

When i got them home, i found 3 were ET38's (5.5"wide) and two were ET45's (5" wide) the two 45's are very curved and the hubs had some serious curb rash.. A few hours later stripping & grinding they came up pretty well.

wanted a more retro look, thought about going gold paint but opted for detailed black....

Not a bad finish for a few poundshop rattle cans and lots of grinding elbow grease....

I've got a stag doo coming up at Big Bang @ Santa pod so have been trying to get car ready for this first show outing...

last week i had a bit of an argument with a big rover on one of the famous devon single track lanes...Not a happy bunny!

DSC00206.jpg

screwed the wing, bumper, lower trailing arm (was banana shaped) & upper steering arm...

found replacements for £30, and yes i realise the wing is a different shade of metallic blue...schoolboy error i know but at least I'm mobile again.

forgot to say tarantulas are for sale back with 4 avon tyres on, one rim has a few scuffs but easily sorted..pm me , i will be taking to big bang to get rid on the 24th of this mth.

How on earth do you get everything so cheap?! haha

You gotta be patient and look in the right places... & never bid just coz everbody else is... works for me!

My £9.99 brand new bumper has now arrived and is fitted, also just picked up some NOS clear indicator lenses for the front for £8 & that includes the p&p. they should arrive in a day or so... :-D

Looks great in the first pics but for the ugly wheel trims, nice that you came up with something different but i think the Tarantula's are best of that bunch.

Shame about the accident, but nobody repairs Rovers anymore so at least that's another one off the roads!

  • Author

thanks.... i just thought tarantulas were a bit common and wanted a bit more retro style without going for the obvious ATS classics (although V.nice)... and on a budget too ;)

You will be pleased to know it was mint green rover, probably the worst kind

  • Author

Wheels on roof is a cool look - maybe not as a permanent fixture though! :)

  • Author

yeah looked cool although it did slow me a bit on the motorway... Made a killing on the Tarantulas, i paid £40 for them on ebay with tyres, sold em 6 mths later for £128... there are some mugs out there!
