Standard Coupe S technical data?

Featured Replies

What BHP does it have standard?

WHAT 0-60 is it?

Top end?

Weight?

Or simple things that i cant seem to find anywhere

Also what are simple modifications for performance wise other than bike carbs

Plan for it is

Bike Carbs

4,2,1 stainless manifold

Full SS exhaust

Not sure from here on... Anyone help?

Thanks Luke

We playing top trumps (slyly peels the Lada Riva card from the back of the deck to beat it with)?

55bhp on paper, bit more for the pre-84 ones in practice

0-60 - Depends how healthy it is, and how much weights in it. Probably about 10-14secs (waits for the "mine does it in 6 seconds" posts)

Too end - About 5mph past a speed where the brakes heatfade the second you touch them. Probably about 90 (waits for the "mine does 120" posts)

Weight 700-800kgs, depending what you're carrying and what's rusted away.

Probably struggle to that top speed too... and i would guess that 0-60 would be closer to the 14 second mark.

As for mods, well a good service and make sure its set up and running well.

The exhaust is extremely restictive, you would not believe how small it is compared to even a stock GT exhaust. So if your sticking bike carbs on it, i would highly recommend a 4 branch and complete exhaust for it.

Another good one for making it quicker would be to stick a GT box on it, as the standard box is quite long (very long in mine)

Ok just what I'm after :)

Just put one in my Mk1 golf after a 1.1, so unsure still on the speed, as i had 95 at RAF valley in mine, but ill find out

Just so i dont kill it

Thankyou :)

You'd be looking about 14s to 60 and a genuine 100 mph all in I would say. Mine would happily go off the clocks, but they only go up to 100 anyway, and I think I only ever saw a genuine satnav 100 on the M6 toll haha

haha fair enough, it should be more tourqey and ideal for the 30mins drive to college, no more screaming engine when doing 65 :D

uel_coupe_s will tell you the weight of one....he's near some weighing scales , breadvan was about 800 with petrol in it iirc

There's not going to be a lot of difference between a Mk1 Golf and Mk2 Polo anyway.

Handling can be improved with G-laderseite ARB mounts or all the way to PPP subframe.

Think there's a steering damper that will fit from GT.

Heatfade - 239mm vented brake discs (as on G40) and VWII calipers.

Long box - might it get faster top-speed in 4th gear than 5th?

But it's in a Mk1 Golf, so already a better car than a Mk2 Polo could hope to be lol

haha yeah, hmm a mechanic on my local VW forum has just seen pics of the engine and is saying its...

electronic Ignition

Single Point not a carb

and i need a ECU to get it running

How can it be if its from a Coupe S?

If this is the case its coming out and were going up to the guy i got it off for a refund and hes paying petrol!

Heres some pictures of the engine

I wouldn't go to that mechanic for any work... he is wrong.. you can see the carb on top of the engine! It runs a coil and dizzy with an ignition module.

Agreed - find a better mechanic. Looks like an 2G, possibly an MH, but the cambelt cover looks wrong for an MH.

My MH has a cambelt cover like that..

carbs definately got the autochoke making it a mk2 item, not an SPI. which gearbox are you using, my eyeballs tell me its a 4speed? from the Coupe S or your Golf? if its the original box you'll still be ringing its nuts off at 65 as you were with the 1.1,

yeah my mh engine looks like it too

Nahh using the coupe S 5 speed, the mount for it is a mixture of the polo and golf one, polo bit attaches to gearbox and golf bit welded on to attach to chassis/body

Going to have a play tomorrow, see what i can do

Coupe S got the same 1.3 engine as any other 1.3 MK2.

That one is an '86-90 unit and 55bhp standard. If you're putting bike carbs on anyway, you were better off using the almost identical 1.4i engine from the MK3 Golf, but the shorter stroke 1.3 is a good little engine.
