83 Mk1 Golf

Featured Replies

Well bought the car last week in February, had problems since the minute I got it

Here’s an overview of the specs

Was originally a 1.1 with a 4speed with 127,000 miles with a Webber carb

It’s now a 1.3 Mk2 Polo Coupe S with a 5speed and 88,000 miles

GTI Front Brakes

Mk2 Golf Pirelli P-slots

GTI Rear Bench

Installed my sub/amp and H/u too, which are hidden by a false floor to keep a original/retro look

Just need to make some clean door pods to house my components

It has a few things which I want to do, to get it looking decent-ish… lol

Which are;

Orange indicator Lenses in front bumper

New plates without the stupid markings

New CL Splitter

New drivers Side rear cluster

Repair black side strip so it clips back on

GTI Front Seats

Source a P-slot Centre Cap

Add Gauges

That’s my list for now, until I have more free time and money

Well here are some pictures from when I bought it, to where it’s at now

How it looked before I picked it up 

And now I have it

It came on some wide steels (not banded still wide though)

P-slots on and a clean

Fully Trimmed

And my progress on door pods; need to get some pockets so I can blend it in with some fibreglass

My work may look messy, but its best I can do, I'm not a very practical person at all, more into the technical and design side of things, and without forking out for a professional or asking people constantly this is the best I can do

Engine conversion

The car that brought the engine home, 895CC Mk1 polo

looking tidy mate, mk1's look sweet in black and those steel's worked really well on it, still looks nice on the p-sluts mind.

your handy work may not be show winning but at least your getting stuck in and doing it yourself mate, you'll get more from it doing it yourself than paying some one else to do it imo

No Life :s ??

Yeah mk1s are ace :D

regards to fuel pipes, if you take off the one to the pump and blow back down it you should hear it bubbling in the tank if you got the right one.

and trying to remember when i converted my first mk1 to 1.3 mk2 polo lump (10 years ago), but i know i had to change the coil, it wouldn't run with the mk1 coil as it was different type for points. also one of the wires that supply the coil ( i think it was white ) doesn't supply enough volts (iirc ~10v) and you need to run a 12v live feed from the ignition in place of the white one.

will also not / struggle to start without the idle solonoid connected on the back of the carb, again a 12v ignition switchable live.

Yeah it has the mk2 coil on it :)

And yeah to get those other ignition feeds we need some more cable, just unsure what type :/

Hopefully have it running soon :D

good luck with it bud, hope you get it running soon.

(have you cut the bit of plasic off the gearlever box to get 5th? )

  • Author

no, but it goes into 5th fine :s

some do some don't. :-D

Cheers for the help :D

If you remember anything pm me :) for tips lol

Am i correct in thinking that the module i need (Ignition Amplifier) i can use a Mk1 GTI one?

If so it may fire up tonight :D

Luke

how easy was the engine swap? I'm trying to find a mk1 golf myself after the chassis snapped on my gt and i am plannin on puttin my gt engine in the golf which i purchase. how do you get the original engine mounts to fit the gt engine so you can bolt it into the golf.

  • Author

The gt engine is from what i know alot easier than what I've done, but is slightly different, best bet is getting on the Mk1 Golf OC and asking there, i was going to GT mine but insurance would be raoe!

Well it now runs, new coil, timing done, new plugs, leads, cap!

All new anti-freeze and oil

painted a few bits pikey style for now ;)

And gave it a clean, as i thought it was going to be going alltypes but wont be finished in time :(

So heres how it looks and whats left before it can be driven on the road. . .

DSC00332-1.jpg

DSC00333.jpg

Engine needs a new manifold gasket - as when it comes off choke its cutting out due to blowing...

Need to either make a custom throttle cable from a Mk1 golf one and Mk2 Polo one of get a Mk2 polo Bar and pedal

Need to get airbox and air filter in (new airfilter needed)

Sort out the selector, as where reverse should be is 1st and 2nd then where 1st and 2nd should be is 3rd and 4th etc etc leaving me with no reverse

and sort out my temp and oil senders, as there not working, temp one seems to go straight up off the guage without the engine even started and warmed up. and the oil just flashes, mechanic reckons there earthed somewhere, so once i have the money ill book it into a garage for those ;) ohh and sort the master cylinder and new disks/pads etc!

So nearly there, just need to wait till my next income of money now :p
