Basically my little brother is looking to buy a first car, and has got his mind set on a mk1 jetta. He is going to view one on the weekend and i was just wondering is there anything in particular he should look out for ? Any common faults he should know about ?

Rust, rust and rust...

Seriously, everything can be replaced easy, if its surface rust thats ok, terminal then if you're no good with a welder then it'll be v. expensive... look for where the clutch cable goes through the bulkhead, weak spot!! spare wheel well, arches esp if they have spats or plastic arches, windscreen surround also...

Look on www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk lots of info on there, though they tend not to talk about them as its not a golf but it basically is...
