How to replace headlight bulb on 9N

Featured Replies

Thought I'd share my experiences in changing the headlight bulb in a 9N, since I wish I'd had this advice before fiddling with the damn thing for 2 hours!

  1. Open bonnet
  2. Remove rubber cap from behind headlight
  3. Disconnect wiring loom from bulb (just wiggle and pull gently)
  4. Three torx screws should be visible. Ignore the screw at the bottom (closest to the floor). The other two need to be LOOSENED, just a few turns.
  5. There is a black plastic mounting which the two loosened torx screws pass through. Using your fingers on the extruded tabs, turn this mounting about 15 degrees in the direction of the engine. Expect some resistance, and a snapping sound, since this action engages and disengages a latch mechanism that secures the bulb in place
  6. The bulb should now pull free
  7. Replace with a new bulb, taking care not to touch the glass of the bulb. The flat tabbed part of the bulb should be at the top
  8. Re-engage the latch to secure the bulb (opposite of step 5). Again, don't be worried about forcing it round, this is necessary to apply force to the latch
  9. Tighten torx screws, replace rubber cap, enjoy new bulb!

Hope this helps

You don't have to do all that, you just grab the connector and twist anti clock wise . The bulb and the holder come out as one.

You would be amazed at the amount Of people hat give up on these. It's an over complication on VWs part.
