coupe s head onto a 1.3 spi block. HELP!

Featured Replies

hi, I'm am about to collect a coupe s head to fit onto my mk3 spi motor and i need some help.

few thing been bugging me,

apparently the coupe s ran on carbs, whereas mines single point injection, will i be able to keep the injection or am i best off using a carb?

if i use a carb is it an easy job?

I'm not made of money and I'm trying to keep things as cheap as possible so what would be the easiest or cheapest way to do this?

its my first delve into these type of engines and the car is a daily so i need the swap to be quick and easy but with the car still being reliable.

any help would be fantastic, cheers guys,Dan

also forgot to add, will this head even fit an spi? lmao

should fit but you'll need to blank off the whole in the head used to drive a fuel pump if using injection

might just be easier to find the right head

cam will be differrant too..but you can swap those

Ok cool, would my original fuel pump be good enough do you think? or would it be worth upgrading?

thanks for your help chief

it has a Crane high lift cam and 1.8 Passat vales. sorry mate forgot to mention

Its the same as your old head, but for the modifications and a hole for the mechanical fuel pump. And the cam pulley is different.

Simply block the hole with a suitable steel plate, and swap the pulley over.

ok sounds like a plan then. the head does have a different rocker cover on to my spi tho. hopefully my spi rocker cover will fit to keep it stealthy and such :)

same rocker

so the plan now is to keep it as standard looking as possible...

just had an email from Rtech in Hinckley

theye gonna set it up on their rolling road so should run nice.

anything else i will need to think about? surely its not just a simple straight swap over theres gotta be a snag somewhere? lol

You want to worry about something? Let me see what i can do..

Err..

Err..

Well,if it has bigger valves then the cut-outs in your pistons may not be sufficient for clearance.

Perhaps you should ask the seller if the pistons were modified, too.

you see, i would never have thought of that :)

if they didnt fit, what about putting a spacer between the head and block? could easily fab a spacer up but only problem i can think with that is that it would lower the compression. do you think it would make a difference?

iv got an old garrett ta0302 turbo in my shed, tempted to weld a manifold up and bolt that on lol (would prefer not to tho)

:0

same rocker

So long as the mk2 wasn't an early one with an 8 stud rocker cover. If it's got 3 down the middle, anything pretty much fits anything.

what are you doing to the engine other than the head mate? If your sticking with injection it would probably be worth switching over to mpi from a gt to get a bit more out of it, might make it a bit more tunable too?

Your old 1.3 head and new coupe s item have exactly the same casting , Valves should be the same to?

So whats the need for this then? Your head leaking of something mate?

Also, would bother with a spacer , dont know why you would need it.

the coupe s head has after market cam and bigger valves fitted hasn't it?

Aaah does it? ok , well if it has larger valves and a different cam to the hydro tappet head then i can see why

How much power do Coupe S's have standard then?

Max

55 raging horses, the engines in the coupe S is the same as the other 1.3's of the time the S is just a trim level.

yeah so surely the head will be just the same as the 1.3 hyrdo tappet AAV head?

Just solid tappets.

Meaning that swapping the head is abit pointless unless its just for maintenance.

Max

yes, unless the new head already has an uprated cam and valves fitted to it

lol yeah. Hope he notices before he swaps it.

Max

i'm pretty sure that's the whole point of this exercise mate lol, he's bought a MH head that has had an uprated cam and valves fitted and he's checking that he isn't going to have any issues fitting it.

your exactly right pal,

by reading through this would i be better leaving my head on and just swapping the valves and cam over? i would have thought simply swapping the head straight over and using the existing spi etc would have been the easiest option.

what do you think this will make power wise?

if its not much then i might be thinking about fitting multi point injection.

or could fit twin webers...

I'm lost. lol

if it was me, and the heads were a straight swap i would just leave the valves and cam where they are and swap head's. if you keep your head but swap every thing over your going to give yourself more work swapping every thing over to your head when you could just swap it straight over.

on a toss up between webbers and mpi it really depends on how much money you have, fitting webbers and getting them set up will cost a fair old bit, it's not just a case of buying them and bolting them on, they need to be set up by some one that knows what they are doing with carbs and jetted up to suit the engine. with the injection it will be a lot cheaper to buy and i'm guessing it would be easier to set up especially if your going to be paying to get it set up at R-tec any way.

either way i would wait until you decide what you want to do about fueling before fitting the head so you can get it all set up at the same time to save having to pay to have it set up twice

ok cool, well, if i carb it ill set them up myself cos I've done plenty of carbs in the past its just because this is my daily i want to make sure anything i do will not keep it off the road for too long.

realistically, i think ill swap it straight over and leave the spi untill i decide.

do you think ill need to upgrade the fuel pump if i use the spi?

cheers for your help bud, when i get the head i think ill take some photos and do a step by step buid thread aswell
