coupe s head onto a 1.3 spi block. HELP!

Featured Replies

Sooo then, Lets re-wind.

Youve got a 1.3 bottom end off a 1.3 spi which will just be from the AAV.

And your fitting the 1.3 head from a coupe "S".

It will be pretty easy but bear in mind that theres quite alot to do when changing a head, Its all pretty simple but takes a while if its your first time.

Dont forget all the bits you will need aswell, Head gasket, 2 x exhaust gaskets, inlet manifold gasket, head bolts and maybe some oil.

Is the new head uprated? After market cam?

If i was you id probably just keep the SPI on for now untill youve got all the bits ready for the swap over,

Or maybe fit the spi unit from a bigger engine , Maybe of a golf or 6n polo (mk4)

You'll only need the throttlebody and injector , Maybe with all these mods and a decent air intake you could see 10-15bhp increase if your lucky.

Hi Max,

I've got a 1.3 spi fitted as standard, the Coupe S head has 1.8 passat valves fitted along with a Crane high lift Camshaft.

possibly looking at MPI or Carbs for the future but currently just want to try and use everything thats already on my engine (bar gaskets and cambelt etc)

I'm just trying to work out if i can do this without any real troubles as the cars a daily so dont wanna strip it and get stuck halfway with a problem if you know what i mean.

cheers for your help dude

Dan

arr right so its well worth it with them mods.

I know you will want to try and do it all the stuff that you have got on your engine ,

But you will still need gaskets , bolts and the belt.

you could do it all in a day if you get stuck in and you allready have the parts.

Bare in mind you will also loose some coolant and oil so these will need replenishing.

MPI and SPI wont differmuch power wise, unless you uprate to bigger sizes.

However the biggest restriction is the very small size bore you will have under your SPI butterfly.

When i chaned from my 1.05 set up to running a single choke carb, i went from having an inlet of 25mm or something to a 38mm

I think the 1.3 will be around 28mm which is still pretty small and will probably restrict your air flow alot.

You could easily find and swap some bigger items over from a larger capacity engine.

This would increase your inlet size and add abit more fuel, Then youve got your bigger valves and high lift cam to get it all in as quick as possible.

wicked, cheers for the info.

just read through your thread, i like it. a lot :)

my "new" head is supposed to be gasflowed aswell so hopefully should get the gas in and out relatively quickly.

Any idea if the stock fuel pump is up to the job if i leave the SPI?

Basically, a day is what i want to do it in and if i need to upgrade the fuel pump then i want a new one by my side before i begin, not get halfway through then realise i need one cos thats just hassle lol.

I live about 5 miles from my nearest motor factors and cannot travel once its off the road you see.

cheers, Dan

I ran my MK2 with the 1.4 and bike carbs, went superb and sounded even better. No mpi is gonna touch that, unless you like smooth and refined.

The Webers are a matter of preference, but are old and dirty/inefficient compared to the carbs used by the likes of Honda for their finest sports vehicles just ten years ago.

Nahhh, I love the raw grunt of a good set of carbs. bike carbs would be the dream but unsure if its worth the hassle for not a lot more power (i would if it was a valver)

I had a Ford Capri a few years ago fitted with the 2.0 pinto 8v engine, kent camshaft, twin 40 weber carbs and k&n filter and it went nice for an 8v. slightly lumpy on tickover but went ok if you put your foot down.

I've also got a turbo kicking about that I'm tempted to fabricate a mani for but id rather keep it N/A and plus thats even more hassle lol. would definatly make it more interesting tho.

cheers for your input

can anybody enlighten me on the fuel pump query?

peace

i wouldn't of thought you would need to upgrade the pump mate. If your sticking with spi then fitting a throttle body of a bigger spi engine could be an option? i think 'G40jon' did this on one of his old spi polo's. Iirc some mk3 golfs have 1.8 spi lumps in them

oh right, sounds like a plan then.

my mates stripping a 6n 1.6 cl i think that may be spi but ill ask him.

if it is then ill pinch it :)

will it run okay for the time being with the standard spi or is it a no go?

didnt know you were in nuneaton mate I've just moved from there lol

may have seen you about

cheers, Dan

Yeah id definetly get your mits on a larger throttle body and injector from another SPI model VW.

You definetly wont need to upgrade your fuel pump becuase its not gonna be using that much more fuel, You MAY do if you do the above however.

If i was you id get all the stuff for the head change, finish that off and keep your existing SPI running gear on for abit and see what you make of it.

If you still want abit more power then get changing your throttlebody over.

The head your getting sounds like abit of a beast, with the after market cam and valves, And also with it being flowed.

Be sure to do a build thread when your doing it all , this should be pretty interesting.

Hope you commented on my build aswell lol!

Dont worry, ill be taking loads of pictures lol. you see some builds on here and theres 2 pictures, one with the old engine in and one with the new fitted lol. gonna go a lot more in depth than that, taking pics everytime i do something relevant so its more of a step by step how i did it.

yea iv decided to run the spi for a bit and see what happens.

reading through everybodys input i reckon I'm gonna forget about mpi and prob just upgrade to a bigger spi until i get bored of that and then its bike carb time :)

only problem with bike carbs is that it will ruin the stealth look I'm going for. I'm hoping to fit the head and keep the original pan air filter housing, but with a performance filter hidden away so if i ever do need to lift my bonnet mr plod wont be any the wiser :)

any idea what i should be looking at peformance wise? roughly...

cheers buddy, Dan

Urrrm standard coupe s and 1.3 AAV's run at 50-60bhp. (Looking at this years aldon auto rolling road figures)

With the head having a 272 , bigger valves + flowing.

maybe 55 + 15? if everythings sweet.

Then if you open up the throttlebody and slightly bigger injector from 1.6 or something, You might be seeing stock GT power.

After all , all the difference in the GT to the normal 1.3's are Cam, Comp ( Doesnt make much of a diff) , MPI and gear box.

I think your biggest set back is allways going to be the inlet though mate, get that swapped.

right, I've just decided. if iv gotta make a new inlet I'm gonna turbo it lol.

standard gt power i would be happy with seeing as its not a gt and ill be building it myself. tempted to go the bigger injector route and to speak to my old man to see if he will have a play with the inlet (spent most of his life boring things out and making things quicker)

id be happy with 80hp using the spi with a bigger injector. for now....

i think its gonna have to be bike carbs cos the turbo surely is far too much work. making the manifolds aint no bother its just oil feeds and getting it running right.

hopefully picking the head up at the weekend with a bit of luck

Max

haaha lol. i was but my head wanted to sell it, my heart wouldnt let me.

i changed that when i bought the turbo cos my mate was adamant we could get manifolds made and have it running in the space of a few weeks so i changed it from my old cars details to this one but then the project got cancelled and i never changed it back lol.

i shall attend to it immediatly

You'll need more than just manifolds for a turbo mate

i know lol just couldnt be arsed to write you a novel, just a quick explanation :)

too busy reading your thread 8-)

i think one of my mate's was on about your car not long back, he said some thing like "i saw your old polo the other day"

dsc00243.jpg

i had to explain to him that my old polo got wrote off not long after i sold it so it couldn't of been mine, (it was satin black after matt but i have no decent photo's of it in satin).

i used to go over the richo meet but since it's been cold i ain't bothered, gonna start going over again once the weather starts picking up again though, i'm a bit of a pussy when it comes to standing around in the cold

  • Author

yea it is a bit shit standing around lol. its alright if theres some nice metal to look at but theres only like 12 cars that go up now and its usually the same 12 that turn up.

wouldnt be mine, mines still red under the bonnet from my lazy respray lol :)

your more than welcome to join us for tea and biscuits and a giggle at my expense when i fit the head lol. I'm pretty sure something will go wrong. my car fell off the jack today as i was "rolling" my arches, not too bothered really as my neighbor sees himself as a bit of a bodybuilder so he just picked it up and i got the jack back underneath lol

I used an AEE cam in an ABD without the valves touching, and that's a very high-lift cam at over 11mm. The 275 degree performance cam is aggressive but should be okay.

So the only notable worry id have of contact is through valve diameter size.

Easy way to see if they'll fit into the piston recesses is by taking a valve out and placing it in the recess in the piston. If the recess is big enough,it should be okay.

A spacer plate would lower compression notably and also knock your cam timing out, you'd be better off with just the cam if the valves aren't compatible with the unmodified pistons (if you're not going to enlarge the recesses).

This is really helpful, cheers mate.

Basically if I have no luck with the valves i think ill keep my original head and just fit the Crane cam into it.

With the higher profile cam will the timing be different to standard if i was to fit it into my stock head? I presume it wouldnt but you dont know unless you ask!

cheers for your help mate,

Dan
