3 Points and 90 quid fine !

Featured Replies

Got 3 points and 90 pound fine on sunday for my banded steels being '60mm' out of the arch. So I have now got a new pair of bandeds the rears are 8j and the tread of the tyre is under the arch and the rim only comes out the slightiest bit. What is legal ?

Grey area....

Before and after pics would help, but if you've already earned 3 points for 'poke' then I really wouldnt bother risking it again, just get wheels that fit and keep your license.

Providing that the tread of the tyre is under the wheel arch then your fine buddy. But as the gent said above....its abit of a grey area and cops can be a right dick about it.

But got to say though.....60mm that is alot dude

ye i had 8.5 on my 6n with 165 tyres had a big strech on them and plus a had some trims on

dunno how many times I've posted this up on vw fourms and some ford forums!!

the law states!! its ILLEGAL to have anything protrude your arch that may cause an accident!! eg rims tyres.. a bumper with a sharp end etc etc

but coppers are buttholes but thats basicaly the law kids

165s on an 8.5j rim?! were they like a 70 profile or something?

mk4gav....i think you will find the law is a little less white/black and a little more grey over this issue than as diect as you think this may be.

Myself and peers of mine have personally found this out for ourselves the one issue that two trafic police officers were in agreement on is that tread pattern must be beneath the arch as to reduce spray for motorists behind us. However one traffic police officer was arguing with his colleague that it wasnt illegal providing the above factor was in order and the other police officer was arguing it was illegal.

You will find many instances with other members on here where they have found themselves in similar situations. Look at LDV Vans....do they not have hub caps/alloys that protrude beyond the arch by a good 2 - 3 cm??? I mean granted this is a factory design, but this would not make it any less capable of causing an accident than a wheel that is protruding beyond the arch at an equal or less distance.

But 60mm is excessive matey...

Just out of curiosity dude...where are you based aswel??? noticed your from south wales, where abouts and is that your polo in you sig?

I always see him giving people negative remarks all time

and ye 6cm soo the cops said but it ovbously wernt that much it was only a 8.5 steel on a 6n

dude its not just down to the width....just because it was 8.5j means nought....you could have a 8.5j with a low offset which will give massive ammounts of poke

I always see him giving people negative remarks all time

Please do spill

It's not about the width.

With these being banded steels, there is obviously a low offset involved so it wouldn't surprise me if they poked 6cm!

Also, you should've asked the copper what was legal. No point asking us is there? Like you've already said to B-Shaw, we're not the Police are we?!

haha touche lol

There's no point snapping at B-Shaw just because you got done and are unhappy about it.

And are you seriously trying to say that when you got your steels banded and decided to run them that you didn't think it could be construed as illegal? I'm sure this can't be the case, so I would say it's your own fault for not finding out what is legal before running them.

That was my dickish response to you being a dick to B-Shaw, who was just being honest.

If it was me, I would do as Indy hinted and go into my local police station and ask. You may have to try a few times as they have some dimwits working at the reception, but get someone who knows what they are talking about to refer you to a piece of traffic law or whatever that states exactly what the requirements are.

Maybe you can get a PC number of whoever you speak to or something so if your new wheels conform to what you've been told and you get pulled again, you can say 'well I did seek advice before fitting these wheels and to my knowledge they are perfectly legal as PC blah blah told me so..'

At least that way they will see you've actually thought about the mod and it's consequences, which I would hope would make their "officer's discretion" swing more in your favour. As long as you don't come across as smug or cocky.

A) He's not a prick

B) He's not a cop because he's a fag

C) I'd slap you with the biggest amount of shit I could get away with too if i were a cop, I mean come on how could you possibly think you'd get away with 6cm of poke :retard:

No wonder you got a ticket with an attitude like that, cops are usually pretty lenient if you're sound to them. I know cos i've been there many times before

the tread under the arch being legal is bullshit.

The fact that one of the 2 coppers you asked told you he would do you for it shows that its down to the discretion of the copper if he wants to do you for it, so how can you say its legal to run it like that if theres a chance you could be done for it?

I tried telling a traffic cop that it was legal if the tread was under the arch, he told me it was bullshit and if he saw me driving it like that again he would have it towed

Its nothing to do with tread , Its the fact youve got something petruding your wheel arch and if you were to hit someone, the wheel would be the thing to strike , not the arch.

However there is a legal amount , something very small.
