Make:VW

Model: Polo coupe 1ltr spi

Year/Reg: 1993 L

Mileage: 90,000 altho GT clocks read 60,000 lol

MOT: july

Tax: july

Location: Bristol

History:

Had the car for 5 years. Bought it from the daughter of an elderly guy who just died and left the car to her, had been garaged all its life and was immaculate altho the service history was lost when they cleared his house or whatever, i got the car on 70,000 with a new cambelt, now on about 90,000. I have only had to do routine maintenance in the 5 years i have had it, done both rear wheels bearings and a new fuel tank cos of a hole not rust, thats about it. Most other parts are up-rated so never got a chance to break lol

Body:

I re-sprayed the car 2 summers ago myself, the progress can be seen in my build thread which i will link further down- therefore the body work is spotless, NO rust at all, never was before spray. All body modifications were welded and contain almost no filler (pics to prove). Took my time and got it right. Colour is LB7Z silver, with extra metallic in lacquer stage, looks factory and pops in the sun!

smoothed bootlid (shape is perfect and straight, blocked out by me!), smoothed rear bumper, rain gutters, side moldings removed, shaved door handles (manual release currently but will supply auto set with remote etc) deleted ariel mount, deleted left wiper recess, completely smoothed front bumper (with lines in tact), custom black front lip, badge-less grille, oem mirror blanks

Bumper mounts tweaked to fit tight.

Shaved front and rear fenders. Doesn't scrub at all only a touch on inside full lock

Was wet sanded and buffed by me.

Always covered with megs no 16 pro paste wax

Engine and Gearbox:

Engine and Gearbox are perfect! NEVER given me a problem, starts 1st time every-time, clutch bites hard always and all gears select perfectly. Pulls smooth and well and revs hard, is often mistaken for a larger capacity engine. AAU code on 4 spd box

Has an ashley four branch manifold heat wrapped, de-cat, into Full 2 inch custom chrome stainless system. Pippercross induction cone on custom aluminum elbow with cold air feed from bumper. Recently changed the belts, dizzy, HT leads, nology silver plugs and full service with new oil and filter. New battery cos old one died during re-spray lol. Painted valve cover and some silicon hoses here and ther to replace worn ones.

I always serviced the car about every 3 months with new oil and filter with receipts to prove and a new fuel filter. altho its always in a heated garage n gets driven very infrequently.

Never leaked any oil, no oil on block etc. Never uses any water altho i have flushed it and put coolant in it several times for good measure, never uses oil. Always chokes then gets up to temp and stays there even in traffic, fans work fine.

Chassis and brakes:

Front:

Professionally tig welded and machined Custom 1 off coil-overs with shortened struts and shortened dampers, relocated steering arms, rally design 225 pound (i think) springs 7" long, with rally design top mounts. Will lower literally to the floor and back to monster truck for MOT. Ride quality is very good for height. Literally don't think ther is a lower mk3 around!

Unrated ARB bushes

Polished aluminum upper strut brace.

New rubber bushes throughout.

G40 Brake setup on front comprising:

G40 calipers and carriers refurbed with new seals and nipples, shot blasted and painted VHT silver

BREMBO max grooved and vented disks

EBC Green stuff pads

Goodridge braided aluminium brake lines

MK2 GTI 22mm master cylinder

All new HQ hard lines

Rear:

Spax argon dampers, 80mm spax springs minus 3 coils (stays in tension for MOT) , with platfrom adjustment (i think)

Rear Polished aluminium strut brace

goodridge braided lines

new pads and cylinders on drums

Handles very well and shocks most passengers, stops so hard it hurts as my GF found out on the high grip the other day! No brake fade at all.

Interior:

RECARO Half black leather grey suede seats with leg support & custom super low seat frames - super comfy hold well.

Cobra trs 3 point harnesses

E-tec 340mm brushed aluminium wheel

matching pedals and gearknob

Black floor mats with grey piping auto style HQ

GT clocks with rev counter n digital clock

Stripped rear with mdf false floor fitted and trimmed in HQ black carpet, trimmed wheel tubs, carbon fibre rear panel cover panel all balck cloth door cards.

Aluminium strut brace

Alpine CD headunit with sub-out

Lanzar mid tweets in dash, huge magnets

Pioneer 8 inch sub in custom ported box (punchy) bolted to false floor, neatly installed with tucked wires and sony 500w amp

Miscellaneous:

Sparco Aeroblade wipers

clear indicators and side repeater lenses with silvertech bulbs

new ice-white mains and side bulbs (look whiter cleaner better vis)

G40 rears lenses

Golf GTI 14x6 inch steels with - Nankang 165, 50, 14 FRONTS nearly new, - falken 512 185,50,14 REARS nearly new, 15 mm hub-centric aluminium rear spacers

valve cover, wheels, gear knob and jelly bean air freshner all match lol

runs proven 18 sec quarter miles with full interior for what its worth lol ( for 1ltr)

Aluminium tax disc holder

Been a joy to own and i hope it makes it to more shows with a new owner or recieves a big motor to match the handling brakes and looks, could be a great further project.

Passed last MOT fine.

Really reliable fun car to own.

Bad points - Front bumper ideally needs a re-spray as i ploughed some snow during snow week and its got some cracks (LOW), not terrible at all just need cleaning up- cheap fix can supply materials used originally. Centre silencer is blowing, can't lie, i run the car so low it does kiss on stuff like uneven roads lol. But i will be having it altered soon to rid this problem unless it sells 1st. passenger door is missing the bolts for the handle, pennies from a scrappa. Only negatives i can think of.

Bump for a sweet car, just out of interest did you get the coilover conversion kit from rally design? An what dampers did you use?

  • Author

built them myself, machined the rods shorter on the lathe, re-cut the threads, drained the fluids, refilled them after shortening the body, tig welded, re-tensioned the seals etc etc LONG and difficult lol, but only way to go really low on a mk3

coils springs of the right poundage and length with ali threads were bought from rallye design online, burton power do the parts for more mulla
