Lol the other day my tensioner shat itself and ended up somewhere down the M25, i cant figure out how to change it, can't see the bolt that need to come off? does the alternator have to come off?

Any help would be great..

I just changed the one on my lupo 1.4 16v, i presume its the same, kinda hard to explain though haha.the hole where the tensioner sits , round the back of it there is a 13 mm bolt that holds the tensioner in place. put the new tensioner in, tighten that bolt, then fit the belt round everythng. then once everything is in place, tehre should be a pin sticking out next to the tensioner pulley, pull that out and it should automatically tension

^^ what he said, but a picture allways helps.. aircon model shown in pic, but the non-ac models are pretty similar to be honest... you will need to remove the alternator to get access to it because the exhuast manifold and oil filter/cooler gets in the way. you will need a 16mm spanner to hold and release the tensioner to refit the belt, and a 13mm socket on a short extension to undo the bolt, alternator is also a 13mm socket/spanner

its a 1997 1.9cl diesel engine,and the pully seems to be hanging down.

just had a closer look,the tenioner pully is still attatched.

but i can move it up and down by hand(with the belt off).

also it seems to be swiveling on its mount.

is this a relacement jobby or can i retension this?

nah, that's bust mate, i expect one of the tabs on clock spring has broken... when they are working properly you need a spanner to turn them as the spring has quite a lot of tension

my mate changed my alternator belt the other week, took 2 min's to do, I could have done it my self. we just jacked the car up got underneath and losened the shiney pully thats just next to the alternator, gave that a twist with a spanner which losend the whole belt took the old one off and put the new one on. easy, but if your one snaped while you were driving I may have caused a bit of damage ^^
