Last time i sprayed some steelies up, I removed all the rust however because the paint let the water through, they started to rust again. I don't want to use hammerite if i can help it, what else can i use? And halfords are going to have to sell it lol.

halfords stuff aint much good

i use bondaprime primer (mail order /ebay) and then rustoleum combi , its a pretty durable combo

if you want a cheaper /easier to find set up...platikote zinc primer and top coat aint a bad choice

When you painted them the last time...did you lacquer them after you painted them?

sure did , about 5 coats over 2 coats or matte black and a coat of gloss.

what colour are you after ?

really cant decide , Its on a tornado red mk3, But I'm not too bothered what colour, just thinking about the rust coming through and a decent finish.

id say make the effort and find some rustoleum ...its decent gear

You need to etch prime them underneath. the rust will come through regardless of what you put on top if you don't use the correct primer.

damn, been refurbing my steelies over the last couple of days and after sanding away all the rust i thought theyd be fine once covered so i just used halfords primer then satin black :/

Etch primer is needed when you take it back to bare steel :-)

They do something similar but, anti-oxidising primer or something. Zinc primer does the same thing too.

halfords have upol etch ...etch as its name suggests etches or bits into the bare steel so its likely to fall off or let stone chips creep

zinc primer has anti rust propertys

zinc182 is good. Used a few cans on the car when i resprayed it. No rust has came back yet and its been nearly a year.

if you just use standard primer, then satin black on bare steel where rust has been rubbed off, how long will the paint job last

anyones guess really...if you cleaned off the rust and put plenty of paint on it should hold up okay...best thing is wash the salt off often in winter thats the biggest killer
