Just wondering as me and my mate are both rattle canning our cars matt colours would it be enough just to sand it down or would you need primer for it to hold properly

Also What Is the best grade sand paper to use?

I didnt use primer on my old nova. Went from factory gloss black to rattle can matt black with rattle can nato green roof. It was fine for the time i had it. About a year iirc...

If you're spraying on a good paint surface, a bit of keying with 600grit should be fine. If you're going onto bare metal, or some sort of rust convertor, then key and use primer.

I'm just going to sand it all down with a mouse sander and get a rough surface and spray, but it will cost me £45 for 15 rattles which should be enough i think, there 400ml cans and its not a profesh job i just wanna spray the car so it covers up the difrent colour bumper bonet and wing

I wouldnt use an electric sander dude, you could go through too deep in places that way. I only use 1000grit paper when I'm rattle can spraying cars

I might rattle can mine but not sure

We didn't use primer on the main part when we did my mates 6N. The only primer used was on the filler and areas where we had gone down to the metal slightly.

As said only needs to be keyed with a fairly fine sandpaper. Don't do what we did and go for course stuff cos you have to go over it several times with different grades which is dam boring and tiring

Seriously though, with electric sanders it will be easy to 'sand off' more paint in some areas than others, thinking like curves and difficult to reach areas (for electric sanders) like where the arch meets the wing/rear quarter etc. I've just sprayed my Jetta in red oxide and keying it with 1000 worked great, it only took a few hours to do the whole car. Same when i did my old nova

Make sure you have a good clean and dust/grease free surface on where youre painting when you do it too, less likely for the paint to react

thanks pal I'm going to sand it by hand whill my mate uses his mouse on his, mines only a 6n so its not that big and i will just go around the car with a cloth to get the dust and that off, thanks alot mate big help i will put like a little thread on aswell :)

what colour u doing you are car mate i did mine matt black with rattle cans jus rubbed it down and sprayed jobs a good un loooks all right

well i used 600 to rub some bits down had to fill a few bits and primer them bits other then tht i used a scoth pad it was the easyest way to ruff surface

yer i have to do a slight bit of filler here annd there but thanks alot mate how long did it take you to rub it all down? roughly?

i did it over 2 days so rougly a day it took me

hoping for the same sand and prep one day and spray another

if anyone is gonna go for matt black

i would recomend homebase one coat quick drying and a 2" brush!!!

seriously its awesome stuff and only £10 a can

i did my volksrod with it and the lower half of my polo coupe.

and i'm now currently using it on my mk1 golf

it needs 2 coats but levels up really well and its not even noticable that its brushed on

not bad like but I'm not keen on the matt black, i like bright colours that stand out, which is why I'm going for pink
