Got this car a short while ago, in 'undrivable' condition, diagnosed as 'one of the driveshafts' by the previous owner! This was after putting a GT engine in my mk1 golf, with bike carbs, 4 branch, full stainless exhaust, ported and polished head etc., and wanting something reliable and comfortable..

Had it trailored back here, and set about changing the front discs and pads, and a new CV joint on the passenger side.

Took me about an hour and a half, but Euro gave me the wrong part (for a 1.4 16v) and i stupidly fitted it before checking. The splines were too small so off and back on with a tdi part.

Next came a gti grill from Neil, and a go in his car which really made me want a gti!

The car was lowered 30mm (what's the point? ) already

So i bought some fk coilovers from here, cleaned them up and fitted them when i had a free couple of hours

Front was seized up quite badly (my hand was soo tired from hitting a hammer and screwdriver against the lock ring)

But managed to lower it eventually. 'Flaps scrape everywhere!

Still got a bit to go down but haven't had time to do it. Helper springs are removed from rear because the part between the two springs was missing on one.

Next came aero wipers (small touch!)

And finally tried a set of satin black 14" Compomotive TH Mono alloys (for sale!) on there to see what it looked like

Also picked up a set of Porsche D90's at the weekend, and some FK adaptors so unsure where to go on the wheels side! Paint the Comp's and get some decent tyres or go with the d90's (not so keen on 16's?) opinions and suggestions very welcome!

So that was my progress over the last 2 weeks or so. Future plans include:

- Decent service (just oil and filters).

- Cambelt change.

- Custom exhaust (also want opinions on this, will be 2-2.5" straight through; no cat (or whatever its called on a dizzle) no silencers, possibly a land rover back box) turned down at the rear of the bumper, side exit at rear wheels, or stubby side exit at front wheels (also not sure on clearance)?!

- Want a remap but $$$

- Leather

- GTI front bumper, with something a little different.

I also have a GTI splitter and lower honeycomb grills waiting to be fitted :-D

Hm yeh i'd agree with you but 16's and they're 8J all round! so arch work and d90's, or compomotives resprayed, new tyres and an exhaust or remap or leather of cambelt lol choices...

plus i think polished would look gay on silver car..?

Lowering has made a massive difference.

Get the GTi splitter on! - even though the splitters are a massive pain in the arse to remove

Got the bastard off in the end! Ended up taking my front bumper off 'cause it was easier and did my air filter at the same time :-)

And thanks Neil :-) I think it makes quite a big difference. I'm really after a gti bumper because mine has terrible paint damage and i want headlight washers! Sort of going for the OEM+ look

Changed my oil and oil filter/seal today after I managed to get the bastard plastic undertray off, and then find the sump plug that VW decided to put in the most awkward, hidden place behind the sump, and some chump had done it up mega tight! Anyway all done and seems to drive a lot smoother now lol.

While I was there I wound the front coilies right down to the bottom (about another 20mm!), so the mudflaps scrape eeeverywhere, and the rears need some adjustment yet..

I'll get some pics up when rears are done

smash some picks up of new lowerage dude, as youve got the same coilies as me and I've got bout 20mm left to go but was wondering is it abit excessive as i can just about fit my fist between the floor and my sump now.

The undertray was quite simple its only two self tapping screws (10mm socket) at the back, still a bit of a cock though lol and.. if you lose them they're 37p each from vw

yer that might be a bit of a job getting them to fit... I've got 9j on the rear of mine with no work but thats 14s!
