Difference between 1.3 mpi and 1.3 gt?

Is there any way of telling the difference between a 1.3 mpi from a genesis/cl(?) and 1.3 gt lump by looking at them? Getting a GT lump from the scrappies but he can't find the engine code, so unsure if it's actually a GT or not (he says it came from a GT though but no proof).

The distributor on the NZ (non-GT MPI engine) will have a vacuum advace diaphram - looks like a flying saucer. The GT dizzy doesn't have this.

Is it a whole engine or just the block/head? If just the block/head, it will be difficult to tell unless you find the engine code flywheel side of the block, at the top of the bottom-end.

If you're getting the whole lot then there are lots of differences -

vacuum advance ignition on NZ, ECU controlled on GT

cylindrical coil on NZ, square on GT

ECU codes will be different (GT ones end in K or N iirc).

I think the throttle body plug on the NZ is white, and on the GT it's black.

etc. etc..

Aye it's just the block/head. Think it's got a dizzy on it but that's about it.

The guy said he couldn't see an engine code on it, so I'll have to wait till the pictures arrive to see what the crack is.

Meaning it was a 1.3 mpi lump, without the cam , Muilt-point ignition and 8p box of the GT.

Yeah you're right, I believe the NZ head and block to be identical to the AAV, only the water pipe from the pump will have a mount for the ISV on the NZ.

The ignition on the NZ is definately advanced using a vacuum however. I've got an NZ dizzy in the garage to prove it!

Just read that back to yourself, MPI stands for Multi Point Injection. Both engines are MPI.

The GT has a slightly higher compression ratio than the NZ, and a more agressive cam.

The GT will have a Digifant ECU that controls ignition advance. The ECU on the NZ doesn't control ignition advance, it is controlled by a vacuum circuit.

The 8p box was never fitted to the GT, you have more chance finding one of these in a normal 1.3 Polo. The 8p box has tall ratios on 4th and 5th. The GT box is close-ratioed.

No knock control on the GT. G40 has it though.

I ment that it didnt have the same ECU and ignition as the 3F aswell as the cam and comp.

I was told that it was basically a GT without the cam , and higher compression.

And that it had the same fueling and air intake as the GT.

Was i told a load of shizen? :x

Yeah you were mate. The NZ is literally an MPI version of the AAV.

Cam is different, compression is lower, different ignition, inlet manifold has smaller runners, TB is different... etc etc

As you say, the only thing similar is the Fuel rail/ Injectors + Air intake system.

hmm yeah thats what i thought, An MPI version of the AAV , sharing the same block + head , and the same ignition. Just different fueling - multi point INJECTION.

And then having its differences from the 3f like its cam and comp.

is their any difference in the head of the pistons?

as before i thought the difference was the crank but when looked in to they all aau, aav, 3f and py have 75mm bore and 72mm stroke i have a 1.05lt block here and the head of the pistons have a flat bit were as the 3f and the g40 pistons are both rounded will sort some piks to explain this tomorrow

sweet anyone know the lobe measurements of the gt compared to the 55 bhp mpi?

LOL - notches in the g40 pistons are where valves have hit it in the past. They are smooth as factory!

lol sorry mate but them notches are way to deep to be valve hitting the piston and i have seen plenty of g40 piston with these also every piston in my engine has these you couldn't see them before cleaning the pistons because of carbon build up also the valves dont sit at an angle to be able to put a notch in like that
