Picture the scene.

There I was casually cruising down the dual carriageway on a lovely summers day at roughly 45-50 (40 speed limit)

WHEN OUT OF NOWHERE...

Slammed my brakes on as soon as I saw it so fingers crossed I wont be recieving any paperwork!

The reason this is in general is.. Surely it is more dangerous having people randomly slamming their brakes on in the middle of a busy dual carriage way than having people travelling at a safe and traffic calming 45-50!

Have you had any close calls or got away without a penalty when you were sureee you would get one?

The only reason people would have to slam there breaks is if they were speeding

Obviously speed limits are there for a reason, But on a big dual carriageway not residential with free flowing traffic!

well hopefully you will be put on speeding awareness like i had to (doing 34 in a 30 coasting on my motorbike!)

and you will be told about the government website that tells you where the vans will be on what day and what time!

it also tells you which static cameras are operating and which arnt!

and also for a van to be able to park there 2 pedestrians have to die b4 they can apply to put a van there!

static cameras require 4 deaths before they can be installed!

yeah man, basically he is following you, but he is in front of you doing it, takes years to perfect that skill..

You cannot help where you have lunch, at 5 diffrent layby's a day, that some serious stocking up on sandwitches and crisps ..

but then their plan wouldn't work. they send you on these courses and then tell you how to dodge getting caught again so when you don't get caught again it's another statistic showing that this course stops people speeding. when infact it just tells them how not to get caught. it's a way for them to try and make it look like they are only doing it to make you a safer driver, and in no way has nothing to do with the massive price you have to pay to go on the course

I'm in complete agreement with speed limits, they are obviously there for a reason and in a residential zone (i.e. 30, 40, 50 limits) I never speed.

But I really don't agree with these vans...they are claiming on the back that they "reduce road casualties". I have to ask how a stationary van with one dude in the back operation a camera is reducing road casualties? You can drive past that camera at 100mph, think "oh well I've been caught now" and keep going. 100 yards down the road you misjudge a corner/roundabout/other vehicle and cause an accident injuring or even killing yourself or someone else.

So now the question comes...what did that camera van do to prevent that happening?

Completely agree with you there. In residentail areas you never know what could step out infront of you. But I've never seen one of these vans in a residential area. They are always (in my area) on large dual carriageways where people, a lot of the time by accident, slip over the speed limit.

Thats precicely what I did. I wasnt racing, I wasnt driving dangerously, I slipped over to 45ish and If anything I was improrving traffic flow!

The way those vans are placed in my area are just to make money

I've been pulled twice for doin 87mph on a 50 (in the boy racer days)

and been let off, well is a good thing but my mate got 3 points for going through a no entry at the dead of night. I think the police need to re-think when points should be given!

but for now i will be sticking to 30mph

i agree with residential speed limits too but some i just cant get my head around. I live down a back road and its just wide enough to get by if a lorrys coming the other direction. Its bumpy, full of holes and people have died. even with houses on it, its still a 60 limit which imo, is bloody stupid. i hate working on my car as i live right on a slight bend and it wouldnt take much at all for someone to misjudge the corner and hit a bump.

Some speed limits are stupid and are positioned for no viable reason. near me they have lowered the roads to 50 for no reason, one near me was a fast but safe road and has been dropped to a 50 over most of its 15 mile route, but then a 2 or 3 miles section of this road were accidents do happen and there have been deaths has been left as a 60, the areas that are now 50's include a few long straights with a good level of viability and are safe overtaking spots, but there are apparently plans to place islands down the straights to stop overtaking.

Dont know about anyone else who lives in rural areas but how many of you would follow a tractor for 15 miles? (there are no lay-by's to allow a tractor to pull in to allow vehicles to pass, despite their being a law for slow vehicle.

WHen will they learn its not the speedlimits they need to worry about but the person behind the wheel. If people cant overtake, they'll just get even more irratic trying to get past. outside where i live, if you come a cropper, you have 2 choices - ditch or river! Quite often see a car parked in the ditch after an icy spell.

With the tractors round here, its a bloody nightmare. Often stuck behind them as the roads to busy or twisting to see :(

Neither have I. It actually took alot of protesting from myself and my Mum to get the police to sit in places on my road to see how fast some of the idiots travel down it. (I should explain I live on a hill with a 30mph limit, its a wide road but there are cars parked either side all the time and there are about 10 families on it with young children). So they sat there for 1 week and then told us they had decided its not worth them sitting on the road because 'only' 7% of the traffic is speeding.

Surely thats too much though and I'm sure if you were to quote figures not statistics you would see easy over 1000 cars use it every week. So thats 70 cars speeding in a week which to me is well too much.

But they will sit on a wide open, very visible, 60mph, straight piece of road with no sign of civilisation on it on a nice day to catch the hundreds of drivers that will go past at 65.
