Hey guys,

Well basically, my polo has got a LOT of little dinks, many scratches and the like from previous owners, and i dont like the colour it is at the moment, its a bluey purply colour, which I'm not a fan of, anyway wanting to respray it, it would be a rattlecan job probably outside, so I'm not expecintg miracles, however i will be fitting valver bumpers and doing a bit of smoothing and filling in the process, I'm wanting a matte colour, or maybe two colours, roof and mirrors diferent or something but haven't got that far yet, but the thing i really want to know, is how much of a job it is to get the wings, bumpers, bonnet, boot, doors etc all stripped down? because i don't fancy having the inside a nasty colour and the outside looking much better?

so basically, how much work am i looking at to get the car down to the shell i guess, and or can the door inside etcs just be done with some very careful masking and just take the door off? as to not spray the inside? i figure bonnet and fron wings are straight forward enough, but not sure about doors and boot rear quarters?

Any light you can shed will be much appreciated :)

also any colour suggestions? :p I'm thinking maybe a blue for the majority, but another colour for the roof and mirrors?

I wouldnt worry about taking pieces off the car, i'd worry about the amount of work spraying a WHOLE car with cans. That will cost a fortune, and will be cheaper to get a quick blow over at a body shop. But if your looking to change the colour, either solution is going to cost more/take longer.

There is no need at all to take wings and stuff off. Just doors boot n bonnet.

what car are we talking about? Mine didn't take too long to strip down to that.

did you take the windows out ? any cheap body shops around wolvo?

Windows stayed in dude. Too much hassle getting them out.

And been as it was staying the same colour it didn't matter so much.

As for body shops, honestly i haven't a clue. If its cheap its probably crap.

Sorry mate its a 5 door 6n, did you just paint the insides of the doors and boot then? and just elave all the windows and that in? how long to get it down to that state?, cheers

well i dont know were you are getting this cost a fortune, i am spraying mine next week with rattle cans, all you need is around 15 cans and if you get them off monsterclours.com will cost you £50, you dont need to primer for mat paint only if you hit bare meta or a fillering, mine is the same colour as yours purply blue mate so i have gone for the magenta pink to be fucked up because it will go well with the purple, then black mirrors, roof wheels and grill surround, i will be starting it next week sometime mate so i wil get some pics if you want :-D

and as for primer, i think you would be stupid to ignore this stage... the quality of finished paint is about 90% prep work. Scrimp here and it will show! if your masked up, why not give it a once over with primer and then sand back to smooth perfection (this is what will give your pint a nice flat texture). If you have any dings, dents, scratches etc then not priming is crazy talk!

If your doing it a completely different colour (a lighter colour than is already on the car) then yes, i would prime it. Or it will come up differently.

b-shaws got the right idea thats all you need to do it wont take long i did my old mk2 in about 2 days with sanding and prepping and i think mine turned out alright although i didint do the inside as mine was silver and i didnt mind too much

This is how far I went with mine although I was painting with 2K. Still regret not doing the boot and engine bay tho, really pissed me off every time i went in them.

I took all the windows out apart from the rear window and masked them back into place. And the door shuts were a pain in the ass to mask off and It wouldnt be easy to do outside.

btw, taking the rear windows out is a piece of piss. they litterally just push out from the corner. just need some rope to get em back in. I've had mine out loads of times. takes 5 mins each way

Thats just noobs painting there cars matt and thinking they are rat. They are just completely wrong

I agree respraying is 90% prep, the mistake most people make with rattle cans is runs cos the nozels supplied are usually crap and only give a narrow fan and this can make the paint look stripey. if you get wide fan nozels it give a far more even coverage, monster do a range of nozels, this is the best money spent on a rattle can respray
