So I just bought a 16v engine off a guy who was breaking one with a destroyed gearbox:

I'm looking to create a reliable economical Mk2 that can still pull quite well. So going to attempt to run the standard injection system & ECU.

Dashboard out of my Mk2 ready for the barebones 16v loom:

Disconnecting the alarm system that was fitted:

Starting to strip the loom of lighting/central locking/electric windows/etc:

Less loom to deal with now:

Currently down to what I hope to be enough to run the ECU, clocks & ignition barrel from the 16v. The Mk2 loom will be spliced at the clocks & ignition barrel only.

Can anyone tell me what each of the coloured plugs do at the bulkhead loom join? And also relay 19 (I know the 18/167 ones) - I've stripped the wires behind it so I assume it was the electric windows relay?

And finally how the Mk2 looks right now, ready for some good weather to treat the rust at the front end and receive some fresh paint that I picked up last weekend:

Yea hopefully in the Mk2 if all goes to plan (never does tho does it haha).

16v Alternator 70A next to VR6 Alternator 90A, I may not bother with the VR6 one.

yo man, yea I did thanks a bunch :) can't believe I forgot the immob box haha. btw the airbox is well shagged, I'm guessing you ripped it off without undoing any bolts? :p Probs gonna source a cheap induction kit anyway if I can't find a standard box.

it came like that the the kid drilled it before he blew the gearbox out of it

good progress mate, i take it your lump is from a lte spec mk4 looking at that fuse box?

relay 19 should be for your front wipers mate, if you get stuck with any thing like that again theres a useful guide on club gti that shows all relay numbers, fuse box lay outs and wire colours. It's in the electrical tech FAQ. It covers a few of the different fuse boxes that vw have used.

Yea I've still got the BBS Serals. Really tempted by mini-g60s though just haven't found a cheap set!

McLovin, good to see you got yours going And yea I'm using the Mk2 body/lighting loom since it's less hassle, so I've stripped all the stuff on relay 19! Thanks for the guide info :)

It is indeed a late spec loom, in a '97 car if that means anytthing.

Mini G60's as in the steels? Check my thread on my GT. Got some 14x6 on there and i love them. Fit real nice and just look tidy and standard. Had some with the non round holes (like passat steelies that everyone says are G60 steels) but i preferred the round ones.

Should be a hoot with the new engine in.

i think it just means the fuse box and plugs are a differenet shape to the early one, i was just curious because mine was different to yours.

Have you thought about retro fitting any of the more modern toys now you have that fusebox in it? Wiring wise any of the toys found on vw's from around the age of your polo will be plug and play, i've been toying with the idea of oem electric windows and central locking

I have thought about it, and to be honest, the only thing that appeals is central locking for convenience. I haven't lost my arms yet so can work mechanical windows fine :) If I choose central locking it will be a custom standalone job probably. No plans for modern toys anyhow, I like things old skool in the cockpit! Apart from the clocks ofc

@demolover, yea the steels, 14x6 ones don't really care about the shape of the holes. Going for the extra ride height with slightly larger tyres (blame Devon roads).

Small update, bit of fresh paint. Finish is terrible but I wanted to just treat the rust to stop it eating the front away, and it is my 2nd ever attempt at bodywork so don't flame!

Yea dude, tbh you could re-use them - only one of them came out of the head. Best to renew though.

Still haven't painted it yet but it should have a coat on tomorrow morning if I'm not out skating. The rest of the kit is all bubble wrapped in a box ready for you :)

Got half of the wiring loom in place :) Swapping flywheels at the mo, and sorting the new block out..

anyone here removed the EGR valve? Is it ok to remove the solenoid (I assume it's this?) on the corner of the head? It's in the centre of this pic, right next to the oil pressure sensor:

The previous owner has broken the black plastic bit :( And the lead cover on the top of the rocker cover, can I get these from VW?

Yes you can.. about £15 I think.

Well I've taken off the EGR, but there was this valve or whatever it is on the side of the head which it was linked to..

Yea it wasn't that big a hole :p Treated the rust and gave it some fresh paint! Ignition switch is going on today and gonna try to sort the interior loom.

Done a bit more work on the bay, nothing major just tidying it up and installing the wiring loom.

Big 3 has been upgraded from Mk2 to Mk4 wires. So much fatter, 90A alternator will go in I think.

Enlarged an existing hole in the scuttle for ECU loom:

The hole next to it will be blanked off if not needed.

Test fit of washer tank & general clean up of the bay:

Can't wait to see it done
