Respect for the work here mate, I've been there losing my mind trying to keep my scabby mk2 on the road. I have a mk2 Golf with so much work needing done on it that today I was starting to think about breaking it. Uni and the poverty that goes with it seems to prevent any momentum with any of my plans with cars. I know when I'm qualified and working I'll need to be almost selfish about making time to spend on projects.

Threads like this (and Katpolos) make me look forward to my time off to get stuck into some shell stripping and welding

Thanks, I know where you are coming from - left uni last year with a massive debt, an empty wallet (landlord fucked us over) and no job in the middle of a recession.. lol gotta soldier on though I've decided!!

Halfords HB680G - even thats a snug fit but perfect for the job

you cant really fit it with the engine in situ, without taking the front engine mount off and dropping it slightly, or raising it.

youll get there with the grinding mate, just trial and error, but you can cut a hefty section out to alleviate any clearance issues.

Sweet I'll get one of those belts then wicked.. I know I will have to lift the engine up anyway to fab a tensioner bracket so no worries there..

glad your not giving up mate, i've been kinda like you recently but more through working stupidly long shifts giving me little time to work on he polo and when i do have time i feel fucked, and even after all the over time i still have no spare cash to spend sorting out the last bits.

Yea I worked overtime today so was wayyy too knackered to think or move, watching the game and chilling out right now!!! Spare time is sparce - I really have to conjure some to visit a local scrapyard which has all the pieces of the puzzle I think!!!

Had a lot on my plate recently so hasn't been a lot of progress.. Tried to get stuck in today but had a little mishap with a snapped driveshaft spline tool :( grrrrrr

I have 2 weeks off before I start a new job so I really want to get cracking. Need a handbrake mech cut out of a donor shell (Mk2F) if anyone can help?

To get organised I am writing a list for myself. Might as well do it here to give myself some motivation to crack on (no particular order here):

TO DO

Torque up driveshaft bolts

Refurbish GT beam

Drain fuel and remove old tank

Paint new fuel tank

Fit new fuel tank with sender unit/lift pump

Refurbish fuel pump assemblyand fit to underside

Fit Mk2F fuel pipes

Refit radiator and make up/fit coolant hoses

Fit 6N interior loom with fuses removed for unecessary wiring & plugs/rear loom taped off + transponder fitted

Fit GT beam

Fit front bumper, grill and headlights inc relay loom (might redo loom to allow 100w bulbs)

Fit ECU

I will have forgotten stuff here but at least I can now concentrate on specific tasks, after the driveshaft tool snapped I sat there thinking wtf do I do next!! Too much to do really lol

Anyway no photos since the progress has been slow & mostly the little boring details. Ignore any marks next to jobs that just me selecting which ones to do next.

Fitting an injection fuel tank, pretty sure the early cable system will foul it. I will know 100% if it needs swapping once I have the new tank in. It is only early west german models this applies to IIRC (pre 85)

Started on the rear beam today, stripped out all the old brake shoes/cylinders ready for new stuff:

Fitted the bumper so she looks a bit more promising:

As you can see, not the ideal place to do an engine conversion/partial resto

K before I lose all faith due to wiring headaches, here's some boring photos of what I do with my spare time:

Late night brake shoe removal.

Yes the old bearing disintegrated and the race fell apart in my hands

New shoes, new cylinders (non-bias type) and new bearings

Kurusted and Frost Chassis Painted, refurbished rear beam ready to go on

Fuelling sorted? Not quite :p I still need an inline pump from somewhere, and a few other bits and pieces.

CHopping a bit off the uprated starter motor wire here ^^

Might be able to get the new tank in this weekend.

whats up with the wiring mate? if your having troubles i may be able to help you out a bit

get that rocker cover polished up mate would make hell of alot better. bet that will be so much fun to drive once its finshed :-)

^ dont have time to polish it at the mo, but I will think about doing it once everything else is sorted

vice is +20bhp mod.

@youngprodigys I'm getting in a muddle with the interior loom, the 16v one I have stripped down is in a right mess lol. Gonna have another go at sorting it out 2moro

For anyone doing this conversion in the future, heres some useful info:

Starter motor for use with Mk2/3 flywheel- VW Part No: 036 911 023 M

Interior fusebox fuses (if using Mk4 clocks):

F1 15A Engine control unit

F2 10A Engine control uni (petrol)

F3 7.5A Engine electrics (carbon filter solenoid valve - only needed if keeping carbon filter)

F4 15A Ignition coil

F8 15A Injectors, oxygen sensor

F9 15A Engine control unit

F10 15A Engine control unit (petrol)

F26 5A Instruments, immobiliser

F27 5A Self-diag., instruments, interior/luggage lights

F32 15A Fuel pump

This is all TBC once I have it running

I'll ask around about the golf, was it a tintop? will keep an eye out for the plate!

I still need a few bits, notably an inline fuel pump, and some of the handbrake linkage (that connects the main cable with the rear beam.

Looks like it should be, fits a Porsche 911. Will get one of them I think.
