1984 Mk2 Breadvan Project - Beige Hailer

Yea its much less effort to use the early tank. But for the injection lift pump you need to shorten it or bash a dent into the bottom of the tank. I had to change the tank anyway (leaking) so you can see why it made sense for me. Plus I get a load more capacity now :D And I'm not chopping it up too much!! You make it sound like a crime lol

The early ones adjust where the bowden cable meets the handle cable underneath the car. When you swap over your beam just swap the handbrake cables inside the drums to the early bowden cable and jobs a good un ;)

Does anyone want me to write a guide on converting an early Mk2 (is Mk1 the same?) to a late Mk2/Mk3 handbrake + fuel tank system? I think it might be useful and I'm taking photos of the process so wouldn't be too difficult. Some thoughts on this would be good.

early mk2 will be the same as mk1, pretty sure of it, sure the guys on the mk1 polo forum would apprieciate it!

trev on there converted his mk1 derby to a mk3 tank, beam etc as he used everything from a mk3 donor car, so might be worth signing up to it, and droppin him a pm!

In the pics where you were having clearance issues - it looked to me like all you needed to do was unbolt the mount for the cable from the rear beam temporarily until you had the beam at the correct angle. Was this not the case?

I managed to not modify my early tank when fitting the lift pump. Routing the extra fuel lines was tricky though. Especially when there's no mounting points for them!

Cool will check out the mk1 forum later cheers saf

Gaz - the early handbrake bracket will definitely foul the Mk3 cable bracket at the correct angle (wouldn't have chopped it otherwise). Also to fit the larger tank you have to do this as well - the welds of the tank line up with the bracket so you can't even bend it to provide clearance (also the bit of metal with the pulley stud has to be chopped out). I wanted the extra capacity and the Mk2 tank was rusted out anyway. I've just taken a pic of it to demonstrate, will upload that later on when it inevitably starts pissing it down with rain!

There is definitely the option of using the early tank, much easier and quicker, I'll state this in the guide, and point out that the lift pump will fit fine! Think we all struggle with the fuel lines though! I've wrapped parts in self-amalgamating tape to protect them, since I don't have any of the Mk3 4-way brackets to hold them in place.

Good to know! My tank was replaced not long before I bought th car (saying that by now it must be at least 7 years old) I do miss the extra gallon and a bit of range you get from the bigger tank. My last long run out I was averaging 45mpg so now I'm running injection it isn't so bad. :)

Yea that's pretty good! Think most tanks last at least 10 years :) The VW original one in mine lasted 25!!

Some progress today:

I will get around to writing the guide at some point.

Progress is slow. Bad weather and busy weekends mean there is little opportunity for me to actually get stuff done. I'm still working on it though, just trying to get my head around the engine bay wiring and fit the exhaust until I can start the engine.

I'm a bit worried that the block will have surface rust - it hasn't been run in about 6 months... Could this damage the engine? Should I be looking for a replacement already? :S

The top of the block and bores may rust abit if open to the atmosphere,

Get them covered up.

I have the inlet blocked up but not the exhaust.. ah well I will see what happens when I start driving it haha

I spent 3 hours after work this afternoon trying to fit a standard G40 exhaust....

Turns out the flexi bit at the front of the mid-box is at an angle and always springs back, pulling the exhaust sideways into the exhaust tunnel.

Going to fix it by welding in a connector pipe this weekend. More pics of progress on Sunday, engine bay will be seeing some work along with front suspension (possibly).

Weather has been pretty shite recently. Got only a bit done at the weekend, then filled with coolant and found a leak on the thermostat housing. Luckily had a spare one so fixed that after work this evening. Couple of pics:

Cool, it's a nice colour and yea mine needs a respray too, but the bodywork has had its fair share of scrapes so it wouldn't be worth it really, the rear quarter on the filler cap side has had accident damage and a poor repair at some point in the car's life.. and they're double skin so I'd need a garage and plenty of time to do it properly.

In other news the fuel system works but the immobiliser kicks in :(

IT'S ALIVE 8-)

Vids to follow, still lots of work to do mind!

lovely!

shame to hear about the accident damage. I'm not sure about mine to be honest i need have a proper look at it soon, it coming off the road so i can do a few things to it. from what i can tell its had a new wing at some point but you cant tell by looking at it. which i guess is a bonus. ill have to keep you posted with pic's mate. =)

Yea I might try to sort the bodywork at some point... lol

Anyone know which wire feeds the Mk4 clocks rev counter? It's all I have left to connect (I think).

Fantastic news mate, now I have my mk1 running injection, you your mk2 and Guy his mk3, fantastic!

Yes!! Glad to see this is still going and alive! I want a ride in it sometime

On my old mk4 it was the middle wire on the hall sender plug, I just spliced into it with the rev counter wire from the clocks.
