So a week in Barcelona and I come back to warmer weather.. wtf is going on?!

I guess that meant only one thing - progress on the Mk2 :)

Got the brown dashboard fitted, all of the interior switches etc and clocks all work. Interior still needs bits and pieces doing, especially the door cards.

This is what the engine bay currently looks like after I wrapped the looms and generally did stuff to it:

More to come, including another running vid. Got a week off next week to hopefully get it near MOT ready.

Got the rev counter working then

Yeah man :) There is actually a terminal on Mk4 coils, under a little plastic cap. It's on the right of the coil near the main plug - you can just see the red/black wire going to it in the last pic). I thought it was better to use this than splice into existing wiring.

Thats a really nice, tidy install.

Very inspiring for the future :-).

Went to fit the subframe today, and found out the hard way - AFH sumps foul custom subframes....

So I have started to take the sump off. Last bolt is stuck above the driveshaft flange, so I will have to take the driveshaft off again.. pain in the ass tbh..

Also can anyone tell me now if I can take the sump off with the 4-branch in place? Or do I have to remove the 4-branch (and drop the radiator forwards etc etc)??

Pics of work to follow. I also took the wing off a few weeks ago to sort a small patch of rust underneath..

Are they strong flex poly bushes by any chance? And a stage 2 subframe?

  • Author

They are strong flex yes, from Poland. The Sport ones which are a harder compound than the regular ones (which are quite soft, like OEM).

It's a PPS subframe with wishbones, dunno if that means stage 2?

got a bit of rust that needs seeing to. and a hole. wahey!

getting a few more years out of the wing!

fitting subframe soon, once I work out what to do with the sump.

fit a mk2/3 sump mate with the oil pick up and it will clear the subframe then thats what i have done and i will be getting a stage 2 subframe soon to fit on my mk2 afh and does your arb clear your 4-2-1 ss manifold with g lader blocks or does it still touch abit as mine does and I've spaced the blocks further down by putting the plates under the blocks to try and add a bit of extra clearance.

  • Author

Mine is a stage 3 from PPS, there is no ARB. When I had the ARB it hit the manifold, but could probably have been fixed by denting in the manifold slightly. I had the blocks as well, but I wouldnt space them out too much if I were you.

And no I think I will cut and weld, I think mine is a later engine with different oil pickup, idk

Good work man. When u hopin to be back ont road

  • Author

Hopefully within the next 2-3 weeks. If I get the subframe and welding done this week I will be making good progress.

I think I'm going to put her up on axle stands to get as much work done in the evenings as possible, but man, sometimes I wish I could just dig a pit and have my own garage!!

8-)

Bare progress this eve, bit dark to do anything more now.

Took the mani, driveshaft (had to hacksaw one of the bolt heads off due to half a spline tool stuck in it!!), and sump off.

This pic will be useful for people fitting a subframe on late AFH conversions and who want to modify the sump.

Big shout out to evans.I on here who helped out by providing some rough dimensions to confirm what I measure. Weather dependent the sump will be cut 2moro :)

Awesome progress dude

Sorry i couldn't have been more help with the sump. Had i have stuck with the AVY i may have known some Dimensions.

Doesn't look like ud need to take too much off it really. Youd get away with just a couple of cm's?

  • Author

No worries man, I will have to do most of the measuring anyway to check and double check.

It is only a few cms yea, so shouldn't be too bad.

Ok cut and welded the sump this evening, it all fits in now, so after a further leak test tomorrow and a lick of paint all should be good :D

Pics of the welded sump:

Not too worried about the dent/appearance, it does the job and doesn't leak so all good. I may make a sump guard for it at some point.

Ok so I had a really productive day, despite having to work 9-12 (urgh).

Managed to get the subframe fitted. Was a real pain because the threads on the wishbones were all seized, and had a few other hiccups. It's all fitted now, but I need to just set it up roughly until I can MOT it and get it somewhere that can do it properly.

Anyway here are a couple of pics:

Once that was done, I was spurred on to deal with the brakes. The pipes were fucked, one had a bulge that split when I removed it. Thank fuck I noticed really, and had planned an overhaul.

Got the carriers off and painted:

And some fresh refurbished calipers that I had ready, they got another coat of enamel:

Tomorrow I hope to get the calipers assembled and fitted, along with the braided hoses. Once that is done I will focus on the small hole in the inner wing.
