Just been trying to reassemble the brake calipers. The pads won't fit with the anti rattle strips, no chance. Don't get how they fitted before though, I didn't paint that surface?? Really pissing me off!!!!!!!!

Update: After filing out the pads and getting a bit of rust off the rattle strips, they still won't fit (they are really tight). So I have given up as I am way too annoyed at the moment.

A g clamp is useful to push the piston all the way in. It is possible that the pads are for non vented discs so too big as stock for vented discs

well I assembled them now. It was due to fitting EBC pads (they are for VWIIs), which are a bit too long to fit with the anti rattles.. Filed them down and got them together, they slide much easier now.

Brake calipers can be a pain to assembl lol

But still easier than drums

yea drums can be a pain too. I always stress about brakes because they are the most important part of the car imo.

I've got the calipers on and assembled. They will have to come off again just to replace the top mounts but for the hub nut I put em on:

Also welded a plate underneath the inner wing to replace the rust. All undersealed and hopefully can paint it today. I will be using a brush to paint it because I'm not too fussed about the appearance, you can barely see the area anyway.

It failed on:

Blowing mid-section (probably where I adapted the 4-branch on, easy fix)

Rear fog lamp not working

Rear wheel bearings excessive play (they are brand new, bedded in so just need a nip up)

Corrosion within 20cm of suspension mounting point (I think this is where I ground off for the alty belt and forgot to paint it. Maybe it needs a plate welding in I will see)

Steering column has excess play

This last point is basically where the two halves of the steering column meet on an early mk2.

Parts 24 ( 803419775B ) are a bit worn, I've seen the play when I had the dash out but I didn't know it was an MOT failure.

Does anyone know if they are available from VW?

not too much then i should be getting mine mot'd in the next 2-3 weeks hopefully just need to do a few small bits and set new carbs up and run the engine in a little really its all small bits left to do on mine and hopefully nothing bad to fail on as near enough everything is brand new or reconned lol when do you think you will get it re tested and bugjams in 3 weeks if you get it sorted mate wouldnt mind seeing this i want to get mine done for that ideally.

yea it isn't much to do, but it's finding the time. I think I will just pay the garage because I used to work there and they know what they're doing. I am moving house soon so need to get it back on the road.

Ok sorry I missed the Polo Show, but went out in Bristol instead..!

The car is now being driven daily, it is great fun and very economical. I can get around 45mpg+ on a long run just pottering along.. Only issues are the centre box knocking and sometimes cold start is a problem (takes 5 or 6 cranks, hot start is fine).

Ah that might change things, it basically sets a fast idle so it should start up first go, it's what I do and it works fine. No harm in trying though right?

It's running injection.

I was thinking the lambda probe could have a fault? I will try to hook it up to Vagcom if I can.

Edit: also T cut the whole car, looks a lot better now the paint was SO faded!

Good to see your up and running dude, (good fun aren't they!!) Also cheers for the pics of the modified mk4 sump too, helped me when doing mine :-)

I'm no expert but i doubt it uses the lambda sensor when cranking ..id look at the coolant sensors and only use genuine ones

Just read through, great conversion, really want to do this to my golf mk1. How much would you say the conversion has cost you??

yes renegade they are bloody good fun :) glad the pics helped

steveo I replaced the sensors, I think it's the battery, always after a couple days it struggles to turn over so I will find a nice new one somewhere

groupb - yes it is a worthwhile conversion since you get good economy from the injection. it was quite a cheap conversion (if you ignore the other parts of the car I restored/replaced). engine and bits etc cost around £300 odd total ignoring the new fuel tank/pumps etc so pretty good really.
