Cheers will have another look , can see three dots and five dots on the face of the sprockets presume they are nothing to do with it then ?

3 and 5 dots?? never seen that before except on the common rail diesel engines...

i'll see if i can find a high res pic in my photobucket page...

these might be of some help.. i see the 3 dots you mention now, i've never noticed those before!..., the dot you need is the one of the outer edge... the cams are not quite in position in these pics, you need 3 hands to fit the belt to these engines, one to hold each cam in position and one to put on the belt.. imagine drawing a line through the centre of the two arms on each pulley so that they line up horizontally... i know that is a really bad description

OK update time , Got it timed up and running still got the original problem of a noisy tappet .

stripped it down again and all the tappets are now bathing in oil to bleed them , 2 questions.

1 Are they self bleeding when fitted ?

2 more importantly when you try and squeeze the tappet to see if any oil comes out some move but some are rock solid which is right ?

firstly, bathing them in oil will not drain them...

they should be springy, but it's not strictly necessary... you can strip down the hydraulic lifters too, there is two pistons and a tiny spring inside, you should be able to pull the piston out with a pair of pliers, it's only retained by a tiny circlip.. strip them all and pour the oil out

 Once again thanks for the top information , all look OK so how the hell do i find the noisy one ?

and i presume its just a case of re fitting them and wait for them to quieten down ?

the chances are if you have stripped, drained, cleaned and rebuilt them they won't be noisy anymore... what happens is the oil inside them gets really old and dirty and prevents them from working properly, the oil gets trapped inside the cavity between the 2 pistons inside them

Have you made sure the bottom end timing is right as well? One tooth on the bottom pulley has a chamfered edge and this lines up with a nub on the casting - when I did my cam-belt the first time on my 16v, I got that a tooth out (and got away with it) and the engine sounded a bit clattery, it wasn't until a little after that I found the instructions for changing the cambelt on the 16V polos and it showed the chamfered tooth and a nub on the block - fortunately I had the engine out to change the water pump and fixed it at the same time

Well I have finally got round to fitting the cam belt.. which was fun!

Not having a haynes manual meant it was guess work to remove and fit it. Not really a problem as its normally straight forward.

Removing was easy. set all the marks and undo things.

The water pump was then replaced and so were the idler wheel and tensioner.

After trying to work out how to clamp the cam pulleys in place... (Cable ties) I set off fitting the new belt. After a bit of struggling I managed to get it on or so I thought. The belts were slack and the timing marks were out as you can see below.

It was then I Realised I had Autodata on my laptop so after a quick search I found this :)

So finally the cam belt is on, all nice and snug with the timing marks lining up and no slack in the belt.

Job done!

Cheers fella`s have been using autodata as well .

Right re timed it all and now she wont idle and misfires like a .........well a thing that misfires a lot :crybaby:

Guessing i am still a tooth out on the belt sooo after work tomorrow off it all comes again

how many times is safe with the tensioner ? or would a new belt kit be a super idea :finger:

if you have a late engine is will have 2 fins on the oil pump casting.. chamfered tooth lines up with the fin on the casting to the right on the 16v engines, only the 8v engines use the left hand one (engine is not at TDC in the pic)

yes, i would change the tensioner and the idler pulley, it's normally these that fall apart rather than the belt breaking.. they aren't cheap though, you are looking at about £60 for the tensioner and idle from german and swedish

Right totally pissed with it now :x

timing spot on, wont start without full throttle , will rev but not tick over and missfires .

then decides to throw the aux belt pulley off the crank pulley :?

so after i get a new crank sprocket and time it up again WTF have i done ?

Can`t see any pipes or wires off but i am thinking i must have pulled something off to make it run like a bag of shite

Still no joy , new sprocket and its timed right yet it wont run or start without loads of throttle.

new plugs, dissycap and rotor arm .

totally stumped on this

any ideas?
