hi I'm just really looking for some opinions of what people think about this... last night i finished work at 10pm driving up a 40mph road through a set of traffic lights on a crossroads there was a que of traffic on the left waiting for the lights to change as mine were green and all of a sudden a police car came round the cars and cut in front of me resulting in my polo hitting into the front drivers side wheel of the police car... I'm really just looking to see who is liable for this accident bearing in mind they came through a red light i never saw them and when i did it was too late i broke as best i could but it was too late... any help with this issue would be brilliant as they want to interview me tonight about it :\

They have the "right" to go through red lights, but they must do so with caution. You will often see them stop and look both ways, before continuing. They must also have the blues and twos on aswell, otherwise they are subject to all the same laws as me or you with them off. It is upto them to make a decision whether it is safe for them to run the light. You have done nothing wrong, you were within the speed limit and driving through a green light, although you never know mate. They might turn around and say your cars exhaust was to loud for you to hear them etc etc....you know try and make it your fault....fooking coppers.

if only life was that simple... i seriously never saw them as they just pulled out from a que of cars when i saw them a split second before the carsh they had blue lights on but no sirens me and my mate were in the car just i think they are gonna try and fcuk me on this... everyone i told has said the same thing "they cant have looked before pulling out" which is true because its a 3 lane road with 2 lanes going straight forward and on going right i was in the middle lane so its not like they wouldnt have seen me if they were looking

This is purely baseless opinion but I'd tend to agree with knight0989, I very much doubt that they have any right of way in that situation especially if only blues and no twos. Even if they do legally have right of way I'd expect them to make absolutely sure nobody is coming and be prepared to fully stop if they were.

Incidentally (AFAIK) there's no requirement for drivers to be able to hear (pretty sure you can legally drive completely deaf) so I doubt they could turn around and say you should have heard them.

I should think they have very precise procedures for these sorts of things, but there is a danger of "your word against theirs".

its a big crossroads on a ring road shouldnt they have some form of cctv or something

my friend had the same happen to him just they was speeding from behind he had no idea they was coming took a right turn then they hit the side of him and he got nothing for it at all.

i dont give 2 fucks about the car just my mate was injured and my insurance will be effected the car was getting sold in november i just dont want my nearly 2 years ncb to go for something that wasnt my fault

I'm guessing you stopped and stuff and spoke to them? What did they say?

i'd inform your insurance company asap. Explain it was a cop car that hit you and then take a trip to your local cop shop to get the details you need to proceed.

Wonder if you could get them done for dangerous driving?

it's the PoPo. they MUST stop at the scene of an injury accident by law, they must also exchange insurance information and also must inform their supervisor/manager at the time and get them involved. if it was a traffic (usually the Volvo T5 or Evo.) or ANPR/unmarked car (usually Fabia VRS), it will (usually) have video running so there is an un-biased account of the accident.

if it turns out to be the PoPo at fault (which seems likely from what you've said) i'd say that you both have whiplash and claim for other injuries (wheather you have them or not but keep it plausible.

thanks alot for comments me and my mate are fine other than severe whiplash and my collar bone being badly bruised... we did stop and they basically took my personal info address phone number etc checked my car out which has just gone through an mot so its sound also breathalised me and supervisor came down although he didnt really speak to me also got some pics of damage will upload asap and monday morning ill be telling insurance company and taking a trip to cop station to check everything... btw it was a vauxhall astra and because my car is low my bumper smashed into their wheel not much body damage but mine is fooooked... anyway thanks again for comments will leave an update as soon as i know anything

its completely the polices fault, they do not have any right of way in an emergency but they can proceed through red lights with caution,

as professionally trained drivers they should be the more competant person and as the ones making a dangerous manoever should have been alot more aware and cautious whilst doing so. when going through lights or crossings they must have sirens on.

I say, do not at any time admit liability or hint that you may have done something wrong. Be stubborn and persistant with your answers that you did nothing wrong and was just concentrating on the junction/lights.. Get your story straight and repeat it over and over.

tell your insurance ASAP and inform them it was not your fault and you do not admit liability. if need be go see a solicitor specialising in car accidents,

And most importantly gather as much evidence as possible. Go look at the crash site, look for CCTV and go ask the owners/managment for copies of the tape of the incident. Go to the police request the call information of that car at the crash time to make sure the officer was actually responding to a high emergency call. ask for any car film footage and the drivers incident statement.

Take the bastards to court and get them fucked! They breathalysed you? Wankers. Trying to shit you up I should think. If you get a good brief or maybe one of these accident claim firms involved you should be in for a few quid.

no, if you have an accident and the police are called/are there they will always breathalyse you, its standard procedure.
