Me and Charlie are embarking on a 2k trip around Europe in August and I was just wondering if anyone had done this themselves?

The route is as follows

Manchester

Derby

Dover

Dunkerque, France

Leige, Belgium

Gelterwoog, Germany

Stuttgart, Germany

Munich, Germany

Bled, Slovenia

Plitvice, Croatia

Triest, Italy

Venice, Italy

Lake Como, Italy

Luzern, Switzerland

Paris, France

Dunkurque, France

Dover

Derby

Manchester

and we set off the 12th and get back on the 22th, so averaging around 200 miles per day.

The car of choice is going be a rude golden mk1 golf cabby.

proper excited now! it cant come quick enough!

over easter 3 of us attempted a trip in a mates nissan 300zx tt, got as far as the outskirts of Hannover on the autobahn when the car started pissing water all over the road, pretty scary stuff considering I was doing 120 in the fast lane playing with a porsche 944, ended up continuing via trains

This was the original planned route give or take including a ring visit on the way home

Ended up going:

rinteln (en route to Hannover, 6litres of antifreeze all over the tarmac, friendly german tow truck man gave us a lift here)

hannover

berlin

vienna

venice

bolgne

st pancras on the euro star

Only advice I can offer is the driving does become tiring, we started off doing 5-6 hours a day but soon got a bit fed up, 3-4 hours is a sensible limit, we found it worked best trying to leave each place around 10am and arrive at the next for 2, gives you the afternoon and evening to play with then.

I'd highly recommend break down cover too, especially if you're on your own, with just the one car, being stuck in a layby on the autobahn we were pretty much stuffed, luckily the RAC got a tow truck out to us in about 45 mins... I've waited 2 hours to be recovered in the Uk before :/

Price wise I really couldn't say, we got stung €159 each for european rail prices, on top of ~1000kms worth of petrol and made the stupid decision to leave the tent in the car, trains/hotels aren't cheap!

Assuming it'd gone to plan, I think we'd budgeted £400-600 each, £500 probably would have done it tbh! (three people, one very thirsty car). Think I spent around £800 in the end!

To be fair it was probably the most scenic layby I've ever stopped at, massive pain nevertheless!

well were are doing it in ten days and wanna see as many places as possible, i dont mind driving 200 miles a day as i can 100 a day easily and more on the weekends!

sounded epic mate, haha shame it didnt work out but a good laugh trying it, amsterdam has to be done haha but thats for a messy weekend with the lads me thinks!

breakdown cover is a must really but i have a load of nos spares that can be used for roadside fixes should we get stuck!

take the 6n on the mongol rally haha it would love teh abuse! and tbh its about the people more than the car, otherwise i would have just taken the peril and gone to the ring. it'll be ace getting to spend some time with my homegirl.

Id love to do something like this, but take a few months to be able to spend a week in each country, and in a camper van

Make sure you get up to some fantastic experiences and take plenty of pics (pref of weird Austrian village folk) so you can document it all when you arrive back :-D the "Yousaf and Charlie does Europe" saga, has a nice ring to it

well were are doing it in ten days and wanna see as many places as possible, i dont mind driving 200 miles a day as i can 100 a day easily and more on the weekends!

What I found though is that I can do 200 miles in a day easy but times that by 5+ days it just really gets to you. Also you find you don't actually see anything as you haven't got time to really look at a lot and when driving all you see are motorways. You get to a place about lunch time you find your B&B/hotel/campsite/ set up head into town just after lunch. Get some food. look arround the place for 3-4 hours. Gets some dinner feel tired so head to bed earlyish as you have to get up the next morning and do another 200 miles and repeat for the duration of the holiday. It gets boring. You really need to stay 2 nights at a few places to relax other wise your back home more shattered than when you started.

Currently the plan is

Nurburg 2 nights

Munich 2 nights

Innsbruck 3 nights

Stuttgart 2 nighs

Namur 1 night

Oh and be carefull of kamakazie Dutch coach's

Used to do trips down to France and Spain in the car all the time when I was a kid, too bad you're not hitting up southern France actually because Monaco is cool as is St Tropez, if only for the obscene display of wealth. Would defintely recommend European break down cover (French recovery mechanics are full of lolz btw) and also the costs, heard the petrol in France is stupidly expensive for us at the moment due to the exchange rate. Other than that sounds awesome, envious man

A few of us had a road trip through France last year to see the F1 at Monaco. We were in a Seat Leon TDI, trying to keep sight of our mate's Yamaha R1..

We originally planned to just stick to the country lanes, but ended up paying to use the motorways because the country lanes were taking too long. Scenic as they are, it was getting a bit too risky having to overtake trucks on the wrong side of the road every couple of minutes, on roads we didn't know.

I wouldn't wanna do a trip like that without air con though, you really need it down there!

This guy has it spot on. I know you only have limited time but I'd rather see the places you are visiting properly rather than a quick half hour walk round and then back in the car again. You'll not really see much doing 200 miles a day other than the dash of your car and I'm sure you know what that looks like by now. I did 3 1/2 weeks around Oz at christmas in a camper van and we got to see a lot but it was only the odd day we'd do silly mileage if we wanted to push on to a place. Otherwise we'd just take it steady and enjoy where we were.

my spelling is bad as iam deslexic always find place names hard to spell welsh ones are easy tho

and it cost me about 1700 ish thats everything tho can be done cheaper worked out to be about 500 quid on fuel !

did it in a mk4 astra as my lupo was to small for two weeks

Still very tempted to drive to the ring but I think that's a job where my mates involved incase I break down!

oh, just seen this thread. Trust me, 200 miles a day is nowt, I did 10K in 6 weeks last summer! And saw a lot, you just have to get up early and drive chilled. Average we've got is 2.5 to 4 hours driving a day...gon be epic. :)

i worked it out in the peril at 40mpg it would cost 300 quid, 450 in the cabby at 30 mpg.

i had nawty thoughts hooning it around the swiss alps in a yellow beasty, but that will involve a trip to hamburgerring int future me thinks
