afh head on a aee....can it be done and how?

just looking through parts for sale theres a guy saying he had an afh 16v head on his aee block. i like the sound of this very much, what works involved though??

I've seen this too, had a look into it, youll need a AEE block, crank and rods. AFH pistons, head waterpump and tensioners etc, the block will also need a extra pulley tapping into the casting and will need deking by about 1mm ish to keep a good CR,

think thats everything, I'm gonna have a go at it anyway and see how it goes

Why deck it? Compression Ratio is calculated by the following type...

b = cylinder bore (diameter)

s = piston stroke length

Vc = clearance volume. It is the volume of the combustion chamber (including head gasket).

Clearance volume remains the same since you use the AFH pistons so increasing the piston stroke length and keeping the same Vc will cause the compression to rise by 1.5. So AFH has 10.5 and with the increase you will get about 12 which is more than enough. Anyway I don't think that cylinder head needs decking.

I am Greek but I am selling just a AEE crank not a turbo conversion. Is there something wrong with that?

nah theres some just a greek dude trying to claim he has an oem turbo kit for a 1.4 16v which he got from a seat dealer for 2.5k, hes an absolute scam artist and i was just checkin

fair enough, didnt look to deep into doing it, i just know that the aee pistons have a greater compression height than afh pistons, doesnt matter anyway, your the one whos actually done it

You cant use the AEE because there isn't a cambelt long enough and the rods are too weak.

i dont really see how the rods are too weak as the afh and aee share the same rods and as for the cambelt I'm going to have a look into that

you can't use the afh head on the aee block with the afh timing belt and tensioner/idler becuase the afh 16v blocks have an extra tapped hole for the idler which the 8v ones dont have, it is possible to mill/drill this exta hole though i suppose but it's probably not worth the balls-ache

i think your contredicting yourself a bit there, I've already said that you would need to drill an extra hole which i cant see to be much of a challenge

I've read about mikeys setup loads of times and actually had a go at it myself but the problem i came accross was finding the correct rods, its so hard finding a set for sale meaning that id have to buy a full engine just for the rods, then you need a aee crank, equally as hard to find for sale on its own, meaning to having to buy another engine

I'm definately gonna have a go at making a aee 16V, I've managed to find a few extra long cambelts to accomidate the taller block so i cant see their being any problems

taller block?? both the afh and aee blocks with the doucentric oil pump are both 380mm tall, and also although it's irrelevant the 20v and late 2.0 crossflow blocks are both 380mm tall too.. in fact the afh and aee blocks are identical in every way except for the extra tapped hole mentioned above.. some of the early blocks are about 8mm taller but you will struggle to find one of those in a polo, iirc they were only fitted in early seat's and mk3 golfs..

also the afh and aee engines have the same conods, it's only the compression height of the pistons that is shorter on the 1.6 litre engines to accomodate for the longer stroke

what are you actually measuring to get a figure of 380mm, I'm talking about the distance between the centre on the crank to the top of the block when the piston is at TDC

for the aee going from the centre of the crank-

43.45(1/2 stroke) + 144(rod c2c) + 30.85(KH)= 218.3mm

and for the afh

38.25 + 144 + 28.92= 211.17mm

surely that proves that the afh and aee engines have different deck heights, by a good 7mm, I'm using the KS catalogue for my measurements and from what i can see there are no variations in KH on both engines nomatter what age

yes sorry that was a bit misleading, i knew i had a pic in my photobucket somewhere... height of the block is measred from the sump mating surface to the cylinder head mating surface it should be 280mm my mistake, and not 380mm like i mentioned ealier

i know the tape measure is not very scientific, but you get the general idea!!!

the crank centreline is always 60mm from the bottom on ALL 4 cylinder water cooled blocks.... above shown is aee, then 20v turbo, they make them in this way to make the machine tooling cheaper.

The AEE is around 8mm taller than the AFH or any 1.6 16v.

The AEE con-rods are far skinnier and longer than any 1.6 16v rod. And skinnier than AFH.

The 1.6 16v engines are all shorter than the 1.6 8v engines.

It clearly shows in the topic linked above that the AEE is too tall in my picture of an AFH head on an AEE block where the cambelt is at full stretch,despite not being routed around an idler pulley. That is because the block is too tall.

This has all been explained before,in the post linked above. Now we have this repost and its full of speculation and fiction which isn't gonna be helpful.

Isn't the ABU and AEE blocks exactly the same?

My mate has a AFH head on his ABU

AFH head, block and pistons from ABU, AFH headgasket, pistons modified for valve clearance. With twin DCOE Webers, ported head and Schrick cams he is running around 135-145 hp, pluss a little NOS Fogger 75 bhp sneeze
