After the ultimate drop on a mk1-3 then i think you will be hard pressed to get it lower then i now can.

As some of you know i had already built my own coilover to get the car low and still have the camber adjustment as the wheels go at a dodgy angle when you lower them to much.

but then i moved house and can only describe the speed bump which the council has installed at the bottom of my street as fookin ridiculous, so id have to have my car 1.5" higher to get out the street.

so AIR was the only solution. but as most of us know with mk1-3 polos you cant just buy stuff of the shelf!

so i decided to build my own.

the bag i have used is the Universal air aerosport

and i have used a male to male 1/4"bsp adapter with a dowty seal between to give me my hose outlet.

i then had some brackets made up with the centre hole about 10 thou bigger then my coilover thread

alot of people leave this as is when they have the brackets made but it is a mot fail as its an unsecured spring!

so my next hard challenge was to make up some steel coilover nuts as i obviously cant weld alloy to steel.

and 2 m58x1.5 nuts were made in my machine shop at work :-)

and i then shaped them around the bolts and the air fitting.

welded them to the brackets

i then shot blasted them clean and sprayed them with etch primer

colour coding paint and laquar

for the top mount of the bag i had to use the original top cap from the coilovers to allow me to use the original bearing mount. so i made a bag bracket from alloy so i could eventually weld that to the top cap.

i used countersunk screws here as i would have had to chop to much metal from the top cap which could have effected its integrity.

so now i have an air ride strut which cost me in total after all the work i did (including the original making of the coilovers) £230 = £460 which isnt bad really!

so how low does it go???

well i had to chop some of the chassis away as the driveshaft fouled

its only the small overlap so it hasnt effected anything strenth wise.

i took the next photos on a jack and a block of wood as i cant get the jack back otherwise lol.

i can tune it lower or higher because i have retained the adjustability of the coilovers. if it wasnt for my wheel choice i could completely deck it!

there are pics of the whole car, but all good things come to those that wait. I'm having real trouble getting my car mapped - once i get an mot il have a custom map done and this will allow me to show it off - but i cant let anyone see it until a certain magazine comes and takes there photos.....dont want to ruin the suprise;-)

i had a good look around this car yesterday, some really good work gone into it and the attention to detail is amazing. so many little touches all over it not to mention all the big mods, the car's a total credit to the hard work and creativity kiz has put in to it

yes, mk1 gti hubs (there r 2 types of hub) with mk1 struts with steering arms welded to them. then I used a mk1 hub (cv) which fitted the mk1 hub and the polo driveshaft (can't remember which one) fits perfect :-)

Sweet, might have to look into that. So the mk1 golf outer cv joint fits the polo shaft? and you use mk1 wheel bearings.

Did you have to strip the struts down for welding the arms on, or do mk1's run inserts to?

i tried this with mk2 golf hubs today just because i had a set here and i can confirm they don't fit

the hole in the bottom of the hub that the ball joint goes into is too big on the golf hubs, gonna have to go hunting for mk1 hubs now.

there also wayyyyy to tall aswell!

I'm working on finishing my boot build for this at the moment and i shall get some photos up of that once it gets to an advanced enough stage - should be tonight some time hopefully
