i hate them too, my mate has an tdi 170 sline a3 and he thinks its rapid, i think its shit! the power delivery is all at 2k and it revs too 4!!! what good is that! you put your foot down and get the power at 2k then it dies and then you have to change gear and do it all again!! its all wrong! the only thing pepole with diesels can talk about is mpg.........nothing else but mpg.

i really hate them, its fair enough if you drive everywere for work and need something economical but pepole are starting to buy them for speed! if i was to buy a car for speed i would buy a proper car, not tdi even tho the bmw's diesel engine is a work of art and does fly there just not my taste at all

Beacse there rubbishhh!!!

My dad owns a 2.0 FSI Touran, I've nevr seen another one around, Only TDI's :/ soo gayy

I love my Fabia VRs - its awesome - revs to 5600rpm has a very lazy torque band and makes about 185bhp or so. And it does an average of 68.9mpg if I drive-miss-daisy!

Not gonna lie the low insurance of a diesel is so tempting for somebody my age! A nice Focus or a Golf wouldn't be half as expensive as the petrol equivalent, plus low running costs.

Still, if it was the same cost, petrol all the way!

to drive, you cant match the torque. I think its a case of as soon as youve owned one. A newer one not the old tractors. Then after the experience and 50mpg with 200bhp i guess you get used to them!

LMFAO Toby....what a random rant mate.

I was sick of going to the petrol station every other friggin day!

My diesel polo does approx 50,000 miles to £10. *slight exaggeration*

life starts at 6000 rpm :)

lol imagine that, the new vw polo diesel! bringing comfort and style in an amzaing small package! low tax and insurance and, electric windows, tilt steering wheel,cd player, central locking, sunroof, air con, 50,000 mpg, great boot space

(i dunno if your car has all that stuff but you could imagine it on auto trader or ebay lol )

well for me it's a case of if i wanted the sort of noise my jetta makes from a petrol i'd have to fit a 20vt :unibrow:

plus if i can keep my foot out of it (which i can't) i'd probably get really high mpg, as it is i only get about 35-40

and it is massively satisfying when you do some one in a conventionally quick car while leaving them in a massive cloud of black smoke, leaving them in no doubt that they have just been smoked but a 20 year old oil burner :-D

they are not the best thing since sliced bread, and nothing compares to taking a rev happy engine to the red line imo, but if you want a cheap daily drive that still puts a big grin on your face, a well played with td is a very good compromise.

I fucking hate diesels.

The AHU in the mk2 which i'm making is annoying me atm.

your wasting your time on a AHU? no wonder your pissed

for all the bullshit wiring your doing you might as well of fitted a pd lump

Edited by McLOVIN

it's easy to plumb the diesel wiring into a mk2 90 spec.

The mini arse was fitting the fbw potentiometer.

now the immobiliser has reared it's ugly head & the person I got the engine from doesn't have the key so I'm going to have to pay to get it removed from the ecu.

this is why i just play with IDI's, they only need one wire to run them although the down side is you can't get the sort of power you get from the PD engine and still have good drive-ability, but if you keep them around the 130bhp mark there still reliable and fun 8-)

i wouldn't piss on a AHU if it was on fire tho, what's the point when the PD's are much more tunable and just as much hassle?

A pd is a shit load more hassle, an AHU just bolts straight in, no custom bits, it's a piece of piss conversion.

You're not thinking of the mk4 golf one are you? I'm using the one from a 97 golf mk3.

i'm thinking more along the lines of power mate, it may be easy to bolt in but it's not very tunable. my mates got this engine in his passat with pretty much every thing done but a de-cat, and it only just pulls on my jetta... until later in the week when i finally fuck my governor off

but we've been going like for like with them tuning wise since we got them, where as when your playing with PD tuning some thing like my jetta wouldn't even be an irritation for it, never mind on the same playing field.

there's a mk2 golf near me that's got a pd lump in it, he done it way before it was cool to tune diesels, infact it's been off the road for a good 3 years now. i really wanna go and have a chat with him about it but i'm shy

Just go do it, nothing to gain from being shy.

You can easily poke 130bhp out of an AHU whilst still retaining the 50 mpg level.

Hence why it's the economy project, the basic costs are:

A passat 1Z engine, on the box with a butchered loom, £70.

The golf mk3 AHU loom (same thing) £30.

The mk2, a red five door J plate driver, 150 providing I took the G60 out for him.

That's what it's basically owing as a "standard" car, a fair bit more has been chucked at it so far, servicing, belts, wheels, brakes, fuelling, tyres etc. . .

It's basically something different to create which my mates dad is going to use on a daily basis.

As has already been said for the price and reliability you cant beat them. I mean my insurance would be double what it is on the petrol counterpart of my car and the diesel is just as nippy, cheaper to run in terms of fuel costs and there are more performance gains to be made from the tdi compared to the 1.4 petrol counterpart should i choose to want to modify it.

I used to drive a 1.9tdi focus ghia, my old man drives it now, i bought it on 60k miles, had the cambelt done and the waterpump whil i was there. It is now on 190k miles and all thats been done to it is new alternator belt, 2 new wheel bearings and one rear shock has been replaced. The cam belt should probably be re-done but my old man wants to run the risk then let him, but the car has made more than the original 2.5k i paid for it and the measily £600 thats been spent on the repairs its needed so if it was to die now it wouldnt be a problem.

Dieselsare just better well built more reliable cars if you ask me. I wouldnt know from a factual point of view if they are better, but I've owned various cars, from various manufacturers and have had the petrol and diesel counterparts and the diesels for me have always been more reliable.

When i have money to spare, dont get me wrong i am going to invest in another petrol car, either a chevy apache or I'm ideally going to have a 1966 or 1971 chevy impala shipped over here as you cant beat the fun that you get out of a rev happy petrol engine. But for practicality you cant beat a diesel.

As has also already been said, its a case of until you own one you dont get what people seen in them. Until i owned my focus tdi i didnt get what people seen in diesels but as soon as i owned it then bought the 6n2 tdi it opened my eyes

that's just it tho, once i've took the governor off my pump my car should be pushing 130bhp, the engine cost me 100 pounds and all that i've had to pay for mod wise was 30 pounds for the piping to my my exhaust (i could of done this for free with scrap metal but couldn't be arsed to go ferreting around looking for it at the time), and a boost controller (although this cost nothing because i was given one by a mate) the rest was free power just by modding/adjusting the pump and turning the boost up. plus i had non of the issues with wiring and every thing bolted straight in because it was a mk2 golf engine.

how much are you having to spend to get 130bhp out of the ahu?

the ahu isn't a bad engine at all, but it's just not the sort of lump i would use as an upgrade, it's too complicated to justify as a quick easy way to get diesel power, and not tunable enough to to justify as a way of getting big diesel power. it's kinda stuck in no mans land imo.

8v 1 Litre Polo + 16v 2 litre Jetta = A cheap run around with some weekend POWERRRRR!!!

Who needs diesel???

and on the flip side, my mate's cupra FR probably costs less to run than your polo and would hand your jetta it's arse without even know it was racing...

who need's 2 car's?

two cars, twice the costs.

You ruin the economy savings by insuring, mot'ing and taxing another car, just run the jetta and enjoy it all the time.

As for the 130, I'd probably have to chuck a couple of hundred at it but i'm not that overly fussed on it.

I was talking to a guy I know called Pat on Sunday and he was saying how £60 on some different injectors should chuck another 20bhp on it, which is never a bad thing.

Well to be honest buddy theres alwayssss someone with a faster/more efficient car than everyone else. I mean the 1.8/2.0 16v puts out 130 - 140 BHP and gets about 30mpg if your driving nice. So of course I'm gonna get whipped either way by a modern car. But at the end of the day its my car and how i want it. I'm not a speed demon I just wanted something with a bit more boot that I can enjoy as my car regardless what anyone elses can do. And my polo well it cost me £170 and uses bugger all petrol so that can take me to work with out ripping up the speed bumps. Alsoooo whos got the cooler badge the Wolfsburg Warriors or the Sparkly Spanish Man? Ey ey ey. And i knowww its made by the same folk. But you get what I'm saying.

I would love to run my Jetta full time. But the roads round here dont permit it. Where as my Polo dances round here with ease. Plus my sisters learning to drive so the Polos there for her to boot around in.

And by having 2 cars I'm keeping people in jobs. Therefore I'm helping the economy.
