how would you do it ?

am thinking of cutting a tin of beans into the shape and glueing it in then skim it smooth?

Doing it like that will crack it

on My squareback, the the pin holes for the emblem was welded shut, and the rest was filled with lead filler

best way to do it would be cut a disc the exact size of the hole so that it sits flush with surrounding bodywork, take off paint from area then tack the piece in all the way around, work your way around skipping about to avoid heat, grind off and if its done well should need a blast of primer and sand and your done

As has been said...if it's not welded up and is filled with filler only it will crack.

I'm a professional panel beater, you could weld in a plate but that'd be more hassle than its worth for that small area, it could cause lots of panel distortion if you weren't careful. A suitable fibreglass bridger would be better. It's much more substantial than filler so doesn't crack as easily. :) If anyone ever needs and panelbeating/bodywork advice, feel free to PM me :)

That doesnt sound all that professional to me buddy, surely if you can weld properly and understand metal then you can avoid it warping.

Give it time...a year from now and you'll see what i mean.

i welded a plate in then welded it , then you need to lightly grind the surounding area as its very slightyly rased from when the metals distorted embossing the badge in the factory , then skil with filler , no more then 1 mm thick though

If you weld a plate across the badge recess, it'll actually cause oxidation of the metal, which in turn will lead to the surrounding area rotting out, my friend. There is no way to protect the area behind the welded plate, therefore - for this application - fibreglass bridger would be better.

id argue you are wrong - I've managed to do it - and I've also managed to protect the area behind and 2years later have no issues what so ever.

id never fill a big hole in an area suseptable to slammed and hard vibration

i work for a classic & vintage sports car restoration company called Rees bros. been there 3 yrs now. I'm not a body expert but i would try cutting a steel plate the exact size of the hole and using a oxy- acet torch braze the plate in by flowing welding wire and flux in. then grind off fill if needs be e.g screwd up.

like i say not an expert but seen it done b4 on a aston DB4.

The way i always do it is to cut a piece either the size of the circle or cut a square piece bigger than the circle and then cut out the badge dent and replace with the shaped piece you just made, no trapped area to rust
