I love that. Proper Badass. Prepare to be good friends with the local five-o :)

Banded steel wheels which are steel wheels that have been cut in half and had a band of metal added to them to make them wider. Highly illegal. Looks good though.

Please elaborate, theres a rather well known company LEGALLY making them and I'm sure others are too LEGALLY. Only illegal if done in a illegalmanner as with anything, wether it be lowering, wheel offset or anything else. You cant really label a complete catagory of modifying as illegal if there are legal and correct ways of doing it?

Yeah you're right. Having done a bit of research into the subject. I have found that someone e-mailed VOSA to get their view on it:

Some of you may recall that, in the midst of a banded wheels thread, I e-mailed VOSA for their view on the practice. The question I asked was:

I have a query about a specialist modification to steel car wheels over which there is much debate about legality.

The modification involves cutting off the outer part of the steel wheel rim, welding a band of additional steel to the wheel, then welding the outer rim back onto the band which has been inserted. The aim of the modification is to allow the wheel to accept a much wider tyre for increased grip. The welding is usually carried out by qualified welders.

Can you confirm whether there is anything within the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, or any other legislation, which prohibits the use of wheels which have been modified in this way?

They have now responded as follows:

Dear Mr Hilton

There are no specific regulations in the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, as amended (C&U) relating to the type of work you propose.

Regulation 100 of C&U does require that all parts fitted to a vehicle are not likely to cause a danger to the user of the vehicle or other road users. I have attached a copy of Regulation 100.

Additionally, you will need to ensure that the wheels do not protrude from the wheel arches, or that modifications are made to the bodywork of the vehicle to ensure that the wheels do not protrude.

Yours sincerely

Sooo I know I have a few sets of wheels but one more can't help and I can't turn down a bargain :)

Been a pretty cool week to be fair !

Won a set of Mk1 Golf steelies on ebay with brand new michelins on and beauty rings for 29.99, only problem was.... they were in cheshire :/ but I love a good road trip.

So me and my mate set off on the 3hr journey, stopped off at a services for a pee break and noticed this ;(

RoadtripHeadlights.jpg

I Guess rain hitting water based glass paint at motorway speeds, it was bound to happen, need to get some solvent based stuff now, I love my yellow headlights !

So got to the place with the wheels and the guy takes me to his garage opens it up and he's got a mint Mk1 Golf sitting pretty, he said it had only done 22,000 miles and was one of the lowest in the country.

Mk1steelsBling.jpg

Winner! looks like these steels haven't seen much road :D Gunna paint them though but not sure which colour, either red or cream I'm thinking :/

So another highlight, my mate gave me his old skateboards from the 1970's !

70sskateboards.jpg

They're quality! the yellow one is a california free former which can fetch pretty good money :)

One of the Moderators on Retro Rides Photoshopped the bready slammed :D looks epic

This is going to be a pretty big update, should be more pictures than words though so hopefully you don't get bored....too much.

The first thing I did after my last update was (half) refurb my teardrops.

1ststage.jpg

As you can see with this one, they are wrecked proberly not even worth the £30 I paid for all four

To get them to this stage I basically nitromoored them, grinded them and sanded.

IMG_20110607_110709.jpg

I then polished them with a mop and compound to get them like this

IMG_20110607_132427.jpg

IMG_20110607_132435.jpg

They're still pretty pitted but what yah gonna do!

This is another one which was alot worse

IMG_20110607_133040.jpg

And this is a pair done, I really can't be arsed to do the other two but if someone wants to buy them i'd do them :)

IMG_20110607_164027.jpg

Just a little teaser.......

IMG_20110613_215301-1.jpg

But first some Ace Cafe Action. I didn't really take any pictures but heres a couple.

IMG_20110628_205457.jpg

IMG_20110628_205702.jpg

It surprised me how big this meet was considering Ace Cafe is so small , I made sure I got close to the cafe before it filled up too much, the road outside was lined with VWs.

When eveyone started leaving I tried to get a picture infront of the cafe but failed massively, crappy phone camera.

IMG_20110628_215417.jpg

Now back to the JDM

IMG_20110613_215301-1.jpg

So I have obtained a pair of these rather rare Classic Work Equip 03's in 13x6, all I know is that they were imported from Japan a long time ago and haven't been on a car for 15 years, the last one being a KP60 Starlet.

Since these were so rare I decided to go all out in the refurb :D

Curve tape is amazing.

IMG_20110719_171831.jpg

New bolt in valves arrived

IMG_20110720_132634.jpg

I then took the laquer off the dish and wet and dryed it so it could be polished.

IMG_20110720_202100.jpg

IMG_20110720_202200.jpg

I then mirror polished the dish......casual

When you think your car hasn't had any bodge repairs done to it through its granny owner life, teh granny surprises you.....whore!

Need more lows!!!

IMG_20110729_115529.jpg

IMG_20110729_115534.jpg

Yes about 3-4mm of filler on the passenger side arch, gotta say though that was a tidy bodge, but soo angry cos all the metal under the filler is destroyed and split like f**k :x

Nothing a bit of flourescent pink gaffa tape can't fix though ;)

Saw this at the poloshow and i'm in two minds now if i like the wheels, think you need to get some differnent sized tyres tbh.

You thinking about doing some custom rear arches dude?

is it just the pics or have you used metalic paint on a non metalic car along the bonnet edge?

I never know what tyres to get, I'm awful at tyre choices, whats up with the wheels? just the tyres or something else? I'm definetly gunna have to come up with something for the rear arches :/

Aahahahah the paint use to be mettalic but now its majorly faded so when I got a colour match................

oh ok , looks a dead ringer for that non metalic they came in

I just got a can of what my cars paint code is no need to be sarcastic :/

The wheels dont fit, thats whats up, the fact uve had to use adaptors has absolutly ruined how the wheels sit, giving far too much poke, it just doesnt look good :( Shame because the wheels are sick!

Banded steels dude!!!! it looks so right!

Also, I'm confused, you only have 2 flashbacks? so your going to run odd wheels?

This looked smart at poloshow, me and max had a good look. Besides the wheels anyways

Afraid toby is correct, but i think you could pull it off with some massive arches.

How wide are the flash backs compared with the others?

  • Author

I get where your coming from with it being too spaced out, but I spent so much time refurbing them I didn't want to not run them, the thing I've thought about is going all out JDM and getting some bolt on arches, the reason i've only got two 'equip 03's' is because they're rare to find a complete set in england. I love old school jdm cars, and they ran different wheels front and back all the time, so I thought fu*k it I'm going to do it on a breadvan instead of making it the same as every other one out there :/

i like it but banded steels are the winner :)
