My insurance policy ends this summer and I'm off to uni in september and wondered what everyone did with their insurance cos i dont think ill be takin my car there but ill wanna drive it during holidays and obviously during summer? Is there any way to get insurance that only covers you during certian dates cos 1500 is alot to spend on a bit of holiday driving?

But then surely you get around 150 days of holidays a year so even £10 a day woulf equate to the insurance policy for the year :p

I've never done it so don't know, but how much of a refund do you get when you cancel policies? For the holidays at 4 weeks at a time that could be worth it? Just an idea, not sure if it's a good one

Try searching for "no deposit" insurance. You can take out a policy and pay monthly and cancel it when you want without loosing your deposit because you haven't paid for it. A couple of my mates at uni do that. Or you could just leave your car at home and lend it to your parents when your at uni, and you could go on one of thier policies. You probably wouldnt be the main driver so it would be ok and allot cheaper.

Whereas I have just sucked it up and taken my car to uni, I couldnt bear not earning no claims for 4 years and still paying ridiculous prices when I leave.

I know exactly where you're coming from but don't you think you'd spend more on insurance over 4 years than you'd save on NCB afterwards? And money at uni is much less easy to come by than afterwards.

I took mine with me to uni and it was great. Expensive and, in Birmingham at least, pretty much pointless but that's what we do for our Polos I guess.

I suppose lol. I'm just trying to justify having my car at uni, when I know deep down that its a complete waste of money, i have two jobs to pay for it too haha.

say you are a student and get a limited mileage on it. i said i would only be doing 3000 miles a year cos i was at uni and it worked out pretty cheap.

^^^^^ this is the way to go - limited mileage policy will reduce your risk and therefore the quote. Might want to think about how you will store your car while you're away at uni - again a nice secure method of storage will reduce your premiums.

Also - premiums are also based on the risk of the postcode where the car will be kept - you might find that if you take your car away to uni it's a higher risk postcode than home, so taking it to uni might put your premiums up! I know for example that Birmingham's quite high risk compared to other parts of the midlands.
