Hello I'm new to this forum and was just after some advice really..

i bought a mk 2 polo this week and and you would expect it dosnt have a very good

in car speaker so really what i wanted to know is what is the best way

to install some decent speakers in the side of the doors and maybe some in the back.

I want to spend a bit of money on it so i want it to sound good! also what do people

recommend doing and if any one else has done it or know any step by step guides on how to install

some good speakers in one of these cars? thanks josh

Hi mate, welcome to clubpolo for a start.

An idea of what u could do. Is buy yourself some mk3 doorcards and fit them and then follow the ' component speaker build in the mk3 doorpocket' in the FAQ section

but i dont think the acoustics of the cars are great. Can be much improved with decent sound deadening material. This will reduce road noise and whatnot so u wont need you are stereo so loud for a start. Granted the quality of the sound will be at peak about 3/4 volume...well tis on mine at least.

Do you want a boot or do u want no rear seats etc and have an entire car full? Bar front seats obvs.

As for speaker brands i cant say much tbh. Iv got alpines in dash and some 6" pheonix gold behind my 2 front seats and i cant fault the pheonix golds. Other people will say diff as I'm by far from an ice expert.

I'm looking for really to keep all my seats just have to good speakers in the doors maybe to on the parcel shelf if this will sound any good

and maybe a cheap sub in the boot also do you think this set up will be any good also I've seen you can get speaker sets that consist of 7 speakers would that be what I'm looking for?

There the same doors so they should do. When i had my mk2 loon i was gonna put mk3 interior in so i should think so. I got a full set of gt doorcards for 15 quid from scrappers for my mk3 tho.

Whats this 7 speaker set you are talkin about? What speakers are included? Sub, front/rear and the other 2? Tweeters? I wouldnt put em in the shelf. I think there tacky tbh, or get a steth shelf. Also try and keep the rear speakers out the way of the sub encloser this will reduce performance of the speakers.

yeah thought they were just saw them on ebay said mk3 thats why i checked i just need a step by step on install speakers in the door cards

The door cards in the picture are MK3 cards and wont fit. That's the 94-99 model. Also known as the 6n.

The door cards you're being told will fit are MK2F ones from 90-94. Its also a MK2 just facelifted,its the same shell,that's why they'll fit.

Shame those above trying to help are using the strange grading that doesn't recognise facelift models,common only in 'the scene',and confusing you as a result. They mean well..

Anyway,you can use your MK2 cards to better effect than the MK2F ones.

If you cover the recess for the doorbin in the part beneath the stripe by bonding a thin sheet of MDF (6mm is plenty),then cover in vinyl to the stripe as per standard,this deletes the doorbin and gives you a factory-looking flat blank panel. You then cut a hole in for any speaker up to 6"x9" at the door hinge end (you'll have to also cut a smaller hole in the original panel underneath for magnet clearance).

You can even get a shorter door bin from another small car to accompany it,or even use the likes of a MK3 Fiesta one and use its grille to cover a 13cm speaker. Its easy,you dont need fibreglass or leather etc for a clean look and the fixed quarterlight windows mean there's room for the speaker to sit flush without the magnet getting in the way of the retracting window/mechanism.

you don't need to remove the single centre speaker, just disconnect it when you wire up your infinities.

personally, i'd never bother with rear speakers (rear "fill" is for economy class rear passengers) and get a decent set of front speakers (either coaxials if you're on a budget or components if you want better quality sound) and a sub for the boot. You can get a decent set of comps and crossovers (to separate the signal into higher/mid frequencies to send to your tweeters/woofers) for around £80.

the best advice i can give is to get yourself over to the talkaudio forum. lots of useful advice and tutorials on door builds, installs etc. be repared for gentle ribbing for buying sony stuff tho

there's also the haynes ICE manual which is a little dated but has some good basic info in it if you're just starting out.

you don't say what head-unit you have, as this will not only affect the quality of your sound, but also if it has pre-outs you'll be able to hook up an amplifier (or two).

again, talkaudio has a great classifieds section - mainly people selling mostly well looked after gear only because they're suffering from "upgrade-itis"

ok mate thanks for your advice i might have to invest in that book, I've had a brief look on my break at talk audio

will have a proper look when I've fin college.

the head unit I've got is a sony x plod 1 was in the car when i got it not my choice!!

and i got some sony 6x9 frm car boot cos they where cheap i swear

sony stuff isn't totally shit, there's just better kit out there for the money that doesn't have the weight of sony's multi million pound marketing

there's some serious equipment floating around on talkaudio (£1500 quid 3 way component sets etc) which is why they can be a bit snobby about lower quality stuff, but they're usually well meaning and trying to save you money or get you into better sound quality.

the tutorials are packed full of reference photos which i printed out and used constantly when doing my first few installs.

oh and to echo what's already been mentioned, soudproofing really is your friend. vibrating metalwork is a waste of sound energy that should be vibrating your internal organs, and the doof doof noise coming from your car makes you look like a idiot unless it's clean and low bass that could wake the dead

knock on the outer metalwork of my front doors and they sound like a piece of mighty oak!

for my golf i spent about £400 on headunit, speakers, sub, amps (all good secondhand stuff) and cable (go big or go home), then about £250 on soundproofing and MDF, fibreglass etc for building my false floor, speaker pods, sub box, carpet etc

the beauty of that install was that with the doors shut and the windows up it didn't sound too loud (best not to advertise that round my way) but inside the car it was like getting massaged by god's tongue...
