Oil Leak from my 6n

Featured Replies

Hey, I have a 1.0L 6n polo and I've been noticing that is has been leaking something onto the ground wherever it is parked.

I think it's coming from the front of the car, at the RIGHT hand side - Drivers side, that is.

I've just looked onto the road today and as it's been raining the stuff that's leaked out has that rainbow effect to it.

I've touched the leaking stuff and it has the consistency of oil 9and the smell as far as I know)

I pulled out the dipstick, cleaned it and put it back in, then out again and there is about 1cm of oil at the bottom of it and that's it.

I've also unscrewed the oil cap and there is no milkyness/gunge in there - it all looks normal.

Any ideas, what might be leaking - which things should I check? Help would REALLY be appreciated!

Have you checked the sump bolt is not leaking? Also check the seal around the sump, and check the sump for cracks. I would top up your oil a bit as well if I were you.

Thanks, I'm a total engine novice and have not yet received my Haynes manual - which bit is the sump? Also how far up the dipstick should the oil come?

It could be the gearbox side?

Selector seal or something similiar?

The gearbox is on the right hand side I think so unless it's leaking sideways along things I don't think it's that.

The gearbox is on the left hand side of the car.

It's on the passenger side.

Sump is at the very bottom of the engine.

When you take the dipstick out, wipe the old oil off and you should see a max and minimum mark.

Then put it back in and recheck it.

ah yeah, you're right, I've been thinking in my head of the car as I'm facing it! Crikey!

OK, just been out to the car, few observations and questions:

I'm pretty sure that I've found the whereabouts of the leak and I'm 99% sure that's it's oil. The leak seems to be coming from where the dipstick tube/pipe joins the engine block. I think I've read somewhere else that this happens - any further ideas/advice?

Also, on the dipstick, at the bottom, is the hatched area in the 'kink' the min and max markers?

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...amp;hl=dipstick - would anyone agree that this could be the problem with mine?

Blocked Breather Pipe?

Although it doesn't seem to be coming up my dipstick pipe? It seems to be around the base of it.

Yeah the dipstick should be filled somewhere within the hatched area in the 'kink'.

Edit: Also, when adding oil, add it a bit at a time and let it settle for a while before adding more, otherwise you can overfill it without realising.

I defo need some more oil in there then!

and thanks for the advice on filling slowly. Any idea on oil type?

Edited by Spade

usually there's a litre between min (bottom of the kink) and max, (end of the hatched markings)

You should be able to replace that dipstick tube if it's cracked and leaking.

OK, found the culprit and have witnessed it leaking with nothing coming from above it. What is the blue thing in this picture and why is there oil leaking from where it joins to the engine?

My pressure sensor went as well, Your lucky that yours is leaking out slowly, all the oil disappeared straight out of my car, and I could hear the tappets within about 2 seconds lol :(
