my mk3 polo gt gets really hot quite quickly when stood still but is fine when moving, does anyone know if this is a common fault or what i can change to prevent this?

could be the water pump, it might be on its last legs where its just got enough left to get the coolant round when its been driven but not when stood still

if its fine when its moving but overheats when stood in traffic id think it was the fan not kicking in. this could be either the temp sensor or the actual fan its self. Does the fan come on?

is your engine standard? got any cold air feeds or anything like that? since putting a cold air feed on my polo the temperature rarely goes over 70 degrees

might not neccessarily be the fan but could be the radiator fan switch, if thats buggered it wont tell the fan when it needs to cut in

iv never heard the fan kick in but exhaust is pretty loud ha and the temp light flashes every now and again even when its cold so it could be the temp sensor.

i have also got a cold air feed aswell with a K&N filter on it but i mean its always around 70-110 degrees and when sat still for about 10 minutes it just stays overheating and steaming.

how long are you sat still before it starts overheating and steaming?

erm it takes around 5 mintues and shoots up over 110 degrees near top of heat gauge.

I had this prob with my 6N, it was the water pump with mine, when your car running take the thin hose off the header tank and see if you get a flow of coolant come out, it should be flowing out not just a trickle

ye ill do that and see if it is cheers man might actually be able to drive around without watching heat gauge constantly.
