I am the proud owner of a tidy mk1 but has the old mechanical small block, its a strong engine but takes a while with the carb in the morning. I need a modern engine, the car is now getting used alot more daily so could do with a 'healthy', more modern engine going in.

I was wondering if anyone in the north west area knows of a good garage or anyone who could undertake the engine in say a weekend with me helping. i am based in preston lancs but will travel.

I dont have an engine at the moment but if i can find a reliable source who will do it for me i will get an engine. Dont want anything too drastic. A gt lump would be nice but i'd settle for even a 1.3 spi

I'm from blackburn mate and I'm tryin to do the same thing. i have a 1984 polo that just doesnt like running. haha. i want a modern engine. even thinking a 1 litre out of a wrote off lupo. does anyone know how much work this will be?

I'll give you a hand mate, done it too many times now, its really easy. Also I replied to you on the Mk1OC re. the manifold

yes yes aaron! do you think it can be done in say a weekend? i suppose i could keep the 4 speeder to make life a little easy'er for now and change to 5 at a later date?

i'll see what i can find engine wise, would be even easier with the carbs although they would then require setting up but at least .

Yea i've just seen that msg to about the manifold..lol may aswell keep that on hold for a time being as it will be different to the hydrolic engine? will get one eventualy. Hey could have started your engine conversion business here aswell... :biggrin:

if you need info about swapping engines into mk1's, you need to talk to grungeisdead (Saf).

Yes it could definitely be done in a weekend, providing you have all the necessary bits to put the new engine back in :-) I can get my whole engine out of my mk1 in about an hour now lol. If you're keeping the gearbox in then its even quicker!

You could give me your old GF engine in exchange :-D

All I'm going to say is that with proper insight and servicing a carbed 1.3 can be a very reliable engine.

Fair enough on wanting a GT lump for power, I switched my carb to a weber DMTR which is very simple to run.The Pierburgs can be reliable if serviced, this thread sums up what I mean.. IMO you can't expect to run an old car without having some idea about how it runs.

Might be an idea to consider using the 1.4 16v MK4 Golf engine with 020 series gearbox, if you can find one and someone to do it.
