gearbox noise when in neutral, goes when clutch depressed

Featured Replies

Right guys,

Quickie for you,

Ever since I stuck the 2nd new engine in my mk2, the gearbox has been making a rattling-ish sound in neutral when the clutch pedal not depressed. If the clutch is depressed the noise slows and disspears.

If the car is in neutral and i start revving, the speed increases with revs.

Its not really audible when driving, but the car is quite loud, so its hard to tell.

The car has quite a bit of drag which is noticable when taking your foot off the accelerator in gear as it slows relatively quickly.

The gearbox just yesterday has sprouted a leak, which i beleive to be the driveshaft flange oil seals.

Sooooo. I'm thinking about replacing the oil seals with the gearbox in situ, and topping the box up with fresh oil.

Does anyone think that the noises I'm suffering could be due to a lack of oil, or possible the diff bearing? or even the clutch release bearing, and the oil seals have just popped.

Basically I want to know whether these ideas are feasible

1) Change Oil seals & Top up - Hope diff isnt dying

2) remove box and fit a new box, send box to a transmission specialist to examine (if i did this i would just replace the engine and gearbox for another that I've got build up and ready

Id rather just change the oil seals, they are pennies and less work than removing the engine, although i dont mind.

Need to decide whether its worth getting hold of another box rather than saving the old one

danke for your time =]

ps i replaced the gearbox oil with 3 litres of 75w90 (haynes specs 3.1 litres for mk3 5 speed boxes) about 2 months ago but it didnt stop the noise.

I think the noise could be the clutch release bearing, and the driveshaft oil seals have just gone due to wear (and abuse from my driving)

clutch release bearing could well be the answer matey

my brother had this on his polo but it got louder and louder as time went on. think it was the clutch release beraing in the end but cant remember haha

crack in the gearbox and the fluid is getting onto the clutch plate which is making it slip mine did exactly the same and thats what i got told about mine!

the clutch release bearing is getting louder, however upon further inspection today, the dripping is coming out where the gearbox and engine meet, directly under the flywheel, so i think its quite possible that there is a crack in the gearbox housing.

gutted like! good thing i picked up another box on friday, although its meant to be for another engine =[

oh well got four days off at the weekend, and will probably just stick the entire spare lump into the mk2 complete with new gearbox and have the old gearbox properly inspected.

I just hope the car lasts for the next two days to work and back, anything after that i aint too arsed.

hoppy has suggested the leak could be on the input shaft, which could be right, and the CRB could be getting louder as its gradually getting coated in gearbox oil.

clutch is fine and isnt slipping.

will order the seals anyway, they are only a tenner, so if it can be saved i shall save it

Sounds like mainshaft bearings to me as the gearbox mainshaft rotates even in neutral but as soon as you depress the clutch it disagauges the box from the engine. If it were the release bearing the noise would happened when you depress the clutch as force is being applied to the clutch then.

Lack of oil would have caused the bearing to run dry due to it leaking etc, once had this happen with an imp box a few year ago.

There is also a small possibility that it could be the spigot bearing as this would have similar sounds (more rattley than the mainshaft bearings), they sometimes break up badly if they are of the roller needle bearing type and not the solid bush.

Hope this helps.

cheers for that dude, its helpful =]

wierd thing is, it only started leaking yesterday and had 3.0 litres of oil it prior to it starting to leak.

when i replaced the engine the last time, there is the possiblity some oil drained out of it, but not much. as soon as i started the engine, the noise was there and stuck ever since without getting louder, i thought an oil change after that would see it right, but its quite probable that when the gearbox was fitted the 2nd time, there was an insufficient amount of oil in it.

however that was 5k miles ago, and the clutch hasnt slipped, and selecting gears has been absolutely fine, so its bizarre.

i may have sourced a replacement box off a friend, so ill take it off and investigate.

the clutch release bearing was also changed when i did the engine conversion 7 months ago, but was non-genuine.

gearboxes are gayors, i think I'm gonna buy a genuine clutch release bearing this time, as i hadto piece together the replacement clutch release bearing as it came apart in my hands haha.

just hope the box will last 100 miles, as i need to get to work n back for 2 days. might bosh a litre or two in tomo just to be sure it dont sieze!

This the CEG dude? I would probably whack a spare on and have someone look at it before you throw money at it. Tameside transmissions quoted me about £220 for a box refurb. I have an AYZ in bits if you needed spares like cogs, casing etc.

yeh it is mate,

my mate in bolton has got a mk4 valver box, whats the deal with the rear mount on a 6n?

is it similar to this

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b12/yousafn/wtf.jpg

or can you use a standard mk1/2/3 rear gearbox mount.

otherwise rick - who had the mk2 square with wood effect on it might have but hes up in lancs.

220 aint bad to be fair, id have to througly research which ratios i want to plump for before giving them a box to refurb, although saying that its always sensible getting one done for an off the shelf spare

Not seen those rear mounts before, you may have to use it. I have used the mk3 rear mount on an early mk4 box though.

that mount attached to a big black plate that was bolted to the underside of the lupo box

the dogbone above looks similar to the valver mount, looking at some pics dan showed me, but it to me doesnt seem substantial, surely the mk4 has more power than the mk3s so you would have expected a better gearbox mount design!

well hopefully i should have a spare box on thursday, change it friday and ill come and mither you at some point and we can crack open the box and have a nose at what 5k of my driving has done to the poor box

Wouldn't worry bout the release bearing too much mate as it sounds like mainshaft bearing or spigot bearing if I'm honest.

U will soon find out when u change the box as the spigot bearing will still b noisey and it will wreck another box

as the input shaft won't be supported by the spigot causing it to stretch the oil seal.

Let us know how it goes!

ill stick some pics up when its off and the casings split =]

Hahaha! Driven to destruction! Good luck dude!

Mine does the exact same thing, I've put a gt box in it and greased the clutch release bearing so would mine be the mainshaft bearing or spigot bearing, sorry for hi jacking thought it would be pointless to start a new thread.

Without you describing what the noise is exactly it would be hard for me to tell really.

Good luck with the journey mate hope all goes well and if i see you broken down ill be sure to stop to give you a tow lol!

bwahahaha =D well I'm getting some gearbox oil dropped off at work from GSF so will bosh a litre in tonight before i set off. will get a video of the beruitness noise to help others.

top man for the help matteus

Sweet! GSF are happy to deliver items to workplaces? I thought it might only have been garages

yeh I've got a trade discount cos I've spent so much over the years, helps that i was mates with the manager at the trafford park one, so i can blag trade prices at any GSF now. good times!

gearbox based fail

new box fitted this morning - 2am in progress shot

DSC03492.jpg

Looks like the diff could have exploded, sommat has fell off inside at least.

That CEG did have the factory rivited on crownwheel. You'll have to crack it open an have a look inside.

aye i will do, I'm intrigued. the pressure plate was merked and had lost one 9mm bolt, was marked, pitted and bent the two lugs on the flywheel.

clutch was and is still fine and the flywheel lugs were straigtend out and it wasnt marked or scored so all good =]

i need to check the gearbox code tho, as the ratios seem terrible, revving its nuts off in high gears, but I'm not sure of speed as the speedo cable stopped working, will have a look at it today at some point when i get some shit done on the mk1
