Should you tell the insurer if...

Featured Replies

When I've got the money I'm planning on changing the wheels on my 6n2 1.0 E and possibly fitting some lowering springs, but only lowering the car at a push of 40mm.

Am I right in believing that you can put VW alloy wheels on from the manufacturer without the need of telling the insurer because they could of been an optional extra?

Also can you get away with just using lowering springs and not telling the insurance?

Thanks, Rich.

If you're gonna do it all by the books, notify them of everything you'll be doing.

best to tell them about everything you change, insurers will look for anyway of not paying out, should they ever need to

I'd tell them. Its unlikely it will increase your premium (my aftermarket ones didn't)

If you tell them they cant throw it back at you later on!

My insurance company has a specific option for optional extra alloy wheels compared to aftermarket ones, so I would guess optional extras are cheaper. I'd tell them but make it clear they're OEM wheels.

i have a 6n,

i fitted wheels off a 6n2, and because them wheels wernt available as an option when my car was made, they are classed as non manufacturer (as the testing wouldnt have been done for them wheels on that car)

however,

say you on your 6n2 were going to fit the wheels off an SE it shouldnt increase your premium, but id still tell them.

and lowering, definately tell them, ok maybe your mate whos done it is fine, and other friend had a crash and they still paid out, but at the end of the day, insurance is for a reason.

you crash into someone, youd have to pay their damage.

cause injury, you have to pay it.

6 points for invalid insurance?

just easier to declare, even if the risk is very low, still declare.

Does the same still apply to wheel TRIMS which are VW branded but not from the Manufacturer?

there is an option for wheel trims but it puts my insurance up by a lot! (18 0 NCB 1 Acci)

Yes, declare all mods!

How much is it likely to increase my premium by if I lower my car? Will it be different depending on whether I use springs or coilovers? Anyone who's had any experience of this?

It wouldn't hardly increase premium if anything with our scheme.

crikey! will have to go with you next time then!

But how can wheel trims increase the premium?

They don't alter the handling or performance or safety of the car so i am no more likely to have an accident.

Insurance is fecked up! no wonder so many people drive without it!

Also, Chris Knott Insurance, do you insure 19 Yr Olds with little or NO NCD? if i don't have an accident this year, i'll have 1yr NCD

The scheme is for 19+ for TPFT cover & 22+ for Comp cover but you must have 1+ year's NCB.
