As I've currently I'm looking at cuttin my springs due to lack of funds

well, they need to be identical.

the amount you cut off isnt necessarily how much you lower.

youll have to take the springs off

mark where your going to cut them, evenly.

then using angle grinder/air hacksaw or a hacksaw (have GOOD blades, not cheap shitty things)

try lopping a coil off, refit them, if its not enough, try more etc.

better than lopping too much off etc!

that is VERY dangerous, please dont bother! i think youd get more respect saying you cant afford to lower it rather than saying I've lowerd it by cutting my springs, you would of me anyway.

and have you ever seen a spring 'fall out'? i'm been involved with many car's that have had chopped springs, either car's i've owned or mates cars, and i have never ever seen or heard of a spring falling out. the ride will only be shit if you chop too much off on standard shocks and it won't get shit until the shock's shit them themselves and the seals blow (which would be exactly the same if you had lowered it the same amount on standard shocks with proper lowering springs).

as for chopping them it depends how pikey you are, on my mates caddy we just jacked it up, took the wheels of and got stuck in with the angle grinder

Chip Foose chops springs on his car's to get the ride height sitting just how he wants it. this man has been building much more powerful and expensive car's than either of us are going to own any time soon, i trust his opinion over internet folk law any day of the week

Are you referring to cutting springs, or people's attitude in general? Nout wrong with a chopped spring if it's done properly after all. But, with the advent of affordable coilovers for just about anything, you really don't need to cut springs to get a perfect ride height anymore.

just like any thing to do with working on car's there is a right way and a wrong way to do thing's. the wrong way could be dangerous but so can changing a wheel the wrong way.

so here's your chance before the thread get's locked. back up your claim that chopping springs is dangerous, because saying that is a massive generalization, it's like say that just because some one 'could' fit brake pads wrong means changing brake pads is dangerous.

so the stage is yours mate, show us some evidence that all chopped springs are dangerous

I once chopped the springs on my 6N. Drove down the yard and the spring came off the damper and went straight through the firewall and hit me in the face, carried on and hit a little group of kittens. We all died!

ok, it can be done safely, like i said, taking off small amounts as apposed to a big cut then the spring becoming lose in the damper etc.

just the attitude of people not giving a fuck worrys me. dont know if I'm just picky, or a perfectionist or what, but some stuff i read on here is just dangerous.

chop your springs, do what you want, at the end of the day its only my opinion, if you crash cause of it il be the one laughin

I'm not even gonna read through this topic,I've been here several ages on it already. Its like this..

Front,one and a half coils from standard.

Rear,two coils. That's maximum,and in my experience and opinion.

You can go further but you'll encounter problems,and one is a probability of springs becoming dislodged. Some argue against risk by their experience,but i disapprove of any lower.

But even when you lower to a sensible amount,you should use new dampers over worn-in units because of the new piston placement in the damper.

So pritty much the best way to go about it is chop lil bits off at at tym and best to take springs out inseeded of cuttin thm still on da shocks ,,and tbh i did wonder why sum1 deleted this thread but hey if u dnt ask u dnt get info and I'm jujs wondering how people agree with it cheers guys The onli people getting abuse is the ones saying dont doit haha live your life i say
