I've read that its not actually illegal if u tack the top of the spring to the cup. its only illegal because the spring drops out when the car is jacked up

Surely as an MOT fail it renders your car illegal to drive on the roads?

Stretching tyres, having sticky out wheels, removing side repeators to name just a few, can be MOT fails, but people in the VW scene generally seem to suck the cocks of the people who do it

As has already been said, dont be a moron whith the grinder and things will be cool. I ran a car on chopped springs (propper lowering kit to start with, so better dampers) for about a year, and I'm still alive and I'm pretty sure no children were harmed either

it's only an mot fail if the spring sits loose in the cups when the car is jacked up and you have to take a good couple of coil's off normally before this happens. also there are other ways around this i've heard of people cable tying the springs to the cups and my mate welded his to the cups.

his car passed an mot like that, i've also heard of people using cable ties and to hold them in place and a beetle i had some one had used jubilee clips.

But surely the heat from a grinder/saw is going to warp them somehow? And they it won't be a good job -- surely just working a few hours overtime and getting coilies would be better and safer?

Tbh the lad asked for advice on how to do it, not if he should or shouldnt, he wants to do it so why cant he? its his car and his decision end of.

whats the difference between lowering springs and chopped ones anyway? my golfs on lowered springs (standard shox) the ride is shite but stance is shit-hot and when i jack the car up they hang and they sailed through an MOT!

Yeah top, the bottom have a smaller diameter to sit in cups so I think you can only chop the tops. Good luck.

if you use a proper cutting disk on an angle grinder you'll be through it in a couple of seconds, i can't see the heat from that being enough to misshape a spring mate. even with the weld it's just a few blobs at the top and bottom, there's no way that's going to change the integrity of the metal in a spring in a way that's going to make it weaker.

everyone that saying do it I'm sure youd be advising differently if for instance he went smashing into your car and wasnt covered. because theres no way in hell that an insurance company would let you get away with that and then your left out of pocket. but by all means let him do it just dont cry when it happens... I'm with rosh on this one
