not if they are tight in the cups, but i've driven car's were the springs are loose when you jack it up and they never caused me any hassle. some of these were proper lowering springs aswel, infact just remembered i had a mk2 golf that was lowered about 80mm on shocks and springs, the springs were loose in the cups when jacked up and that still passed it's mot.

everyone that saying do it I'm sure youd be advising differently if for instance he went smashing into your car and wasnt covered. because theres no way in hell that an insurance company would let you get away with that and then your left out of pocket. but by all means let him do it just dont cry when it happens... I'm with rosh on this one

My old coupe van ran on chopped springs, fronts were fine for mot, however the rears were far too short, had to be swapped for standard springs to pass. the ride wasnt too bad, but certainly not like a proper lowering kit.

Chopped springs and chopped springs are two different things.

I said 1.5 coils off the front earlier for a reason - that much wont have a detrimental effect. It'll still pass an Mot because the springs will still sit in the cups due to the margin on preload. And it wont bounce about anywhere,the dampers will still be able to control them.

All this scare mongering about crashing etc is probably not far off only if you go chopping the springs in half. Use some common sense and remove only within the preload margin and its absolutely safe - and legal.

Btw,not all springs can be chopped. You cant chop a coil if it is concentric,only where the next coil is the same size. I know that on all pre-'02 Polos,that's the bottom of the front spring and either end of the rear. Not so sure of newer ones,may be the same,never worked on one.

I think mikey has the right idea, you can chop, but only to a point. So take advice from people who know their stuff. In the end its your choice, just be sensible about it.

Regardless of anythin else, if you take too much off, the ride will be soft, and the shocks are more likely to bottom out, decreasing the life time. Also makes for a bit of a shitty ride.

Correct. I lost the top coil on my 6n2 and the spring basically floated around free in the cup when you went over a bump.

Ride wasn't affected from what i felt, but i really don't think it's a good idea.

tbh i chopped my springs took a coil out but em bak on drove it but soon regreted it it was bouncy as fook and the steering felt mega wooly but it up to u at the end of the day

Leaking shock would happen if lowering springs were fitted to standard shocks anyway.

The way springs are made doesn't naturally lend them to being butchered with an angle grinder.

Trust me, I butcher a lot of stuff with angle grinders.

if you dont lop too much off so the spring doesnt fall out and you put it back in the holders properly the mot centre will never know, having said that at work we have a g-plate merc s class thats about 4 inches off the ground with some silly camber on the back, and we took it for a mot 5 mins after we diid the springs and it passed first time

please don't talk shit, chopping a coil off a spring stiffens the ride, it doesn't make it bouncy (the only way this could happen is if your shocks were fucked). this is what i have found with the few times i have been gay enough to only do one coil and this is what practical performance mag found when they did a write up about it too. the ride is going to be no worse than just lowering springs put on old shocks.

the story would of been exactly the same had he fitted the same size lowering springs on those shocks, so what's your point?
