cutting my springs

Featured Replies

You're going to declare this to insurance as well, right?

Nah thought not.

Whatever happened to not doing shit if you can't afford it? I've ran my polo like a 4x4 for nearly 5 years because I couldn't afford to lower and insure it like that. You say yourself that by the next MOT you'll have done the job properly, so why don't you just have some self control and wait a few months?

If you're going to do it legally then fine, but I doubt it somehow.

i don't want to get into the whole in's and out's of insurance and undeclared mods, but have any of your ever had a crash in a car and had to have an insurance inspector come out to have a look at it? because the way that some of you go on about it i doubt you ever have. it's just some bloke that don't want to be there that's only having a quick look around it to see if it's a right off or not. if it's insured as standard with massive body kits and alloy's you would have an problem, but a couple of less coils on your springs? don't be silly

Well yeah he's probably not going to get down and inspect the springs without reason, but it's pretty obvious when these things are lowered so if he's really trying to do his job properly he'd have a look when he sees it's obviously lowered.

i love it when a gay thread comes together

i hope he's woke up this morning, made a brew then plugged the grinder in

all they are coming out to do is asses the damage and work out if it's economically viable to repair, they are not expert's in car's, they are just pencil pushers with a calculator. chopped spring's are hard to notice because the chances are they would of been on the car from new so would just look like any other spring's he's seen, the only difference will be they are shorter but how is he going to know how long they were from the factory?

i'm not saying it's right to lie to your insurance, just pointing out that some people on here really like to over exaggerate things at time's.

save cutting your springs for a few months, i may be gettin coilovers in this time, i have a set of 6n/6n2 springs that i could sell you for £30 + p&p

Do whatever you want.

BUT... if you are driving down the road and hit some oil or have a tyre blowout (this kind of thing happens)

You slide across the road hitting 1 or 2 cars possibly writing them off and eventually come to a halt on the crash barrier puting a sizeable dent in it.

Say its 5k per car you hit (as an average cost) and if you do any damage to the barrier they charge you for that. Plus the recovery vehicles that come out and sort the mess out.

A mate of mine did this and the bill came to about 18k iirc.

Not only are you going to get done for having void insurance but they arent going to forget about the money.

I know i would rather pay a bit of excess and a little bit more premium than shell out 18k or even 10k or even 2k.

This is fairly unlikely but i know i cant afford to gamble with thousands of my pounds that i dont have.

Not telling you what to do but if you fancy taking risks then you should know roughly what you are risking!

A mate of mine did it to his saxo, but only to the back lol.

Looked pretty funny.

I am willing to bet my earnings for a year that your mate did not chop the springs on the back of his Saxo.

Go on then.

Here's a Saxo rear spring (or 2).

Do I get to keep my £18k or is it yours now?

Time to ask a few questions it seems :-)

yeah saxo's have torsion bar's instead of springs, it's common for them to be notched tho (i think that's the term for it?), they are slid out slightly and the axle lifted then slid back in to adjust the ride height.

yes, fist car i had, and it was standard!

If you chop your springs you will die - FACT!

If you chop your springs you will die - FACT!

The man knows.

pah nowt wrong with chopped springs. ok the ride will be a bit choppy, but back in the days when the cheapest coils cost as much as a car and suspension kits werent cheap either, everyone did it :-)

if he only takes a sensible amount off the spring then why would he need new shocks for an mot?

what is the point in chopping the springs then? may aswell leave them as you would barly notice.

I've had chopped springs on my old 6n (previous dick) ride was mega bouncy....thats how i know

the reason suspesion companys wont allow a guide to chop springs is because its dangerous.

even lowering springs on standard shocks isnt great.

p.s

dont talk shit ;)

i don't need to talk shit, your talking enough of it for the both of us ;)

how do you think spring's are made to be a certain length? do you think they grow on tree's? because believe it or not they are cut to sizen (yes chopped from the factory).

if the ride on your 6n was shit it was because you fucked up the most basic of suspension mods, the only way it could be a shit ride directly after cutting them (baring in mind that the shocks would last at least a few miles even if it was decked) would be that the shocks were already fucked. this would be the same if you had fitted lowering springs, spring's don't make a car bounce more, how can it? the dampening is controlled by the dampers not the springs, if the damping is too hard the car will skip, if it is too soft the car will bounce about and 'wallow' around like a boat... all springs 'bounce' through design (it's a spring after all) it's the damper that controls this. if this isn't controled then it's a fault with the damper not the spring.

and if you would barley notice around -40mm and a firmer ride then you wouldn't want to fit lowering springs either would you?

just because you fucked it up doesn't mean that the ride would be shit for every one else, some people are capable of lopping a coil off a spring

who said i fucked up?? yes the damper is designed to damp bumps but the spring also plays a part, the spring comes from the factory at the lenth it is for a reason

not just for the sake of it. if you go cuting a spring shorter than the original shock then of course the ride is going to be shit as the spring is missing part of.....well.....THE SPRING!

I'm actually an insurance assessor, since we obviously have so much time on our hands we go around all the wreckages which we sometimes actually go to look at, I mean all of them, you know even the ones only worth a couple of hundred quid and actually note down all the part numbers on everything.

Even when they're completely totalled, we look under at the springs, sometimes we measure them. They never snap in a crash. True fact.

Sometimes we rock up to the garage, have a brew, have a chat and then go round them carefully.

Of course this is all bollocks, people do a job and everyone's lazy.

As per my usual thing, man up and do it. If you're stupid enough to ask if it's okay, you're stupid enough to read through four pages of self righteous wank.

Lowering springs are so cheap these days though.

if the ride was shit then you fucked it up, simples.

the standard dampers can take shorter spring's to a certain degree, -40mm is the most you can go before taking the standard dampers to beyond their limit's. as long as you don't cut the spring so much that the damper goes beyond it's limits then you should be fine as long as the damper is in good shape (i said all this about 3 pages back).

i don't need to read some link to tell me how a spring works.

you keep going on about springs but this isn't just about springs is it? you could fit a proper -90mm spring on to a standard shock and it would make it ride like shit because the damper would shit itself, even though this is a spring that is designed to run this low. fitting a shorter spring is legal as long as the damper doesn't shit it's self right? so what is wrong with chopping a spring as long as the damper doesn't shit it's self??

I heard Mclovin's so paranoid about crashing he actually fitted spring compressors to his car and just left them.

He's still running with them on now, when he crashes he's going to quickly go unbolt them then ring the fuzz and get an ambulance.

my polo doesn't have any springs ;)

just the compressors eh?

double hard ftw.

double hard ftw.

in the low rider world they like to call the 'ram's ;)

see that's another point, my polo passed an mot with no springs on it at all, i know this is a totally different ball game, but it's still passing the same mot with the same rule's about suspension, and it's passing without any springs what so ever. so now tell me chopped springs won't pass an mot.

I've failed for having chopped lowering springs in the past, being honest, there was a lot of play.
