'02 TDI 100BHP brake upgrade from 256mm -> 288mm

Featured Replies

Word up boyos!

I'm a complete noob at polos (I'm a Punto GT man), and i've used the search function before anyone wants to slate me :p

My best mate has a 2002 polo TDI 100BHP version - the one with the gay round h/lights.

(Whats the model number for that?? like 6n or whatever... told you i was a noob haha)

Well anyway, he's got me running round coz he managed to warp the hell out of his near enough brand new disks (with new pads - both standard jobbies).

i have had a quick look into it and it looks like:

- the 100 brake model has 256mm front disks (same as 1.2 golfs and polos?)

- the 130 brake polo has 288mm disks (same as polo GTI?!)

Pointless putting on grooved or uprated discs, or better pads coz its pretty obvious that the size of the brakes is what the problem is.

I have heard of the Golf dudes upgrading from 256 to 288mm simply by changing the hub and disk - keeping the original pads and calipers used on the 256mm disks. Does this apply to the Polo?

I have come to the conclusion that polo's from 2002-date, share the same running gear and the less gay looking newer models have only had a facelift - am i wrong?

Can anyone shed any light on the hub and disk upgrade please?

Sorry about all the questions, and help would be much appreciated!

(PS i've already told him to get a proper car so none of them kinda replies please :p )

Peace

Moaz

I'm currently getting hubs off a vrs fabia, calipers off an audi tt, discs and pads off tt. I'm only really going for this large increase in power over the winter. my pd100 polo currently sits at 151bhp with a map

these provide you with a 312mm upgrade kit :)

they are a lot better imo and have more pad and discs options.

vrs hubs arent cheap of easy to find but this is your best bet mate. (£160 delivered from mainland to NI)

the caliper and carrier on your and my polo as standard are one piece, whereas the tt are seperate caliper and carrier hence why you need to change the hubs.

and mk4 golf hubs will not accommodate this 312mm upgrade.

anymore questions just ask dude

The biggest you can go to is 323mm discs on that chassis!!

However with your current hubs you are stuck with 256mm discs. You will need to get the Hubs from a Fabia VRS, Seat Ibiza PD 130 Sport or Polo PD130 Sport. You can then go fo either 288mm discs with calipers & carriers from andy of the cars above. If you want to go bigger then Audi TT calipers & carriers will see you upto 312mm discs. Or if you want to go for mega stopping power then a nice set of Brembo's of an Seat Leon Cupra R will see you upto 323mm.

I'm running 312's on my Fabia VRS - its stops on its nose!

I've found the 288s on my PD130 to be no better than the 256s on my PD100. So if you are going to do it, do it properly and go for the 312s. (you'll need 16s to clear the brakes with this size)

bleed them.

i thought yorks had a 332mm mk4 r32 front conversion on his?

i know it only 9mm difference but just wondering

How can you be so sure it's the size of the brakes that's the problem? Are 256s really that poor? I've got 256s on my Mk2 16v as standard, and the weight is likely to be the same of the two cars but my car is a lot faster, and even with braking from 130+ I've never fucked discs/pads, and when bled well it will stop better than most things I've had.

Surely the issue is that he's not run them in properly? That's why they've warped? Not just all vw brakes are crap! Mine are great on my tdi

Thanks for all the replies there lads!

I spoke to me mate for a bit more detail and he said had new disks and pads fitted during a service before he went road tripping to the Alps with his lass. I questioned him on it, and he said his car was rammed full of snowboard gear for both of them (he could barely see out the rear screen), and he was hammering it on the twisties - both up and down the mountains over to the Swiss side.

I dont think he bedded them in properly (even tho i told him to take it easy for 300 miles), and having a car that flipping heavy with luggage means that you shouldnt be fast-roading it! He's a numpty! Thanks for bringing that up sellick dude!

@02polo: me mate is a nurse (and broke!) so trying to keep within budget and doesnt want to upgrade from the standard 16" wheels just yet (or gamble on the calipers fitting without proof) - but you've pretty much laid out the options i would go for!

@polo6n1600i: Cheers for the confirmation - what i wanna hear!

@gaz: i'm quite surprised that there's hardly any difference. I guess is where the larger brakes are more effective is for fast road use where you would be hit with fade earlier with the smaller disks, then the build up of heat would eventually warp the smaller disks a lot sooner than the larger ones.

@rich: already bled, blud, brand new fluid!

@toby: polo mk2 or golf mk2? Either way bruv, the 02 Polo tdi has a kerb weight of nearly 1300kgs! Both polo and golf mk2s are under 1000kgs! Thats why 256mms are mint on yours ;)

One thing i read tho is the PD100 and PD130 calipers are the same? If thats the case then cheapest option for bigger brakes is disks and hubs off the PD130... and therefore should fit under the same 16" wheel...

The easiest most cost effective thing i could do for him is fit new grooved disks (i like grooves!) and pads, then bed em in for him! He let the garage screw him for the brakes, i could have done the same thing for him for under £100, so to cut his losses and get best long term gain for his daily driver i think the PD130 hubs and disks are in order. I'll let y'all know how it pans out...

Peace :smoke:

Go out and drive any mk4 golf (~1400kg depending on engine) and see how amazing their brakes are! That'll show the difference that this upgrade gives!

Everytime i stop in my brother's mk4 TDI i nearly hit my head on the dash cos i'm so used to my crappy polo brakes! I might have to look into upgrading mine ... :ninja:

02polo. i've been looking at your profile, nice work there mate! You like changing you rims dont you!

Have you got a post of all the mods you've done to get it to 150bhp? I wanna forward it to me mate, show him how he should be doing it :p

surely a mk2 wouldnt weigh the same as a derv 9n?

imo the brakes arent great and i have ran mine in plenty and have waped them well after running them in. thats backroads for you i suppose :p

thanks, yea wheels i planned are i think going up for sale :p

all i have on mine is pd160 intake pipe, pipercross panel filter, egr delete and a remap.

i got the map before all of those where fitted apart from the panel filter.

she ran 118bhp standard so the map put it up a normal 30 odd bhp.

egr delete makes no difference to performance, just stops shit going into the inlet manifold and can sometimes help increase MPG.

so just tell him/her to get a panel filter and get a map :)

Holy shit I didn't realise the Polos were that heavy. Fair point then, seeing as my Mk2 (Golf) will be lucky to tip the weighbridge over a tonne.

That impressive mate, i'd be well chuffed with them gains! What have you done for your exhaust system? Standard with GTi backbox?

What do diesels sound like with a proper exhaust? I raced a MTM Golf GT TDi back in the bad ole days but the side exit on me Punto drowned out ALL noise, even diesel racket, so never actually heard it just had a face full of black smoke lmao. (Youtube here i come!)

I've been telling him filter, exhaust, remap ("stage 1" innit ;) ). But only after he has done something with his brakes and suspension!

Gonna head to VW with a list of parts tomorrow and see if i can work out some shit from part numbers and that. Hope the parts dude is feeling bored and wants to make his job worthwhile hahahahaa!

hubs will set you back over £300 a side from the VW dealer... much better off going to a scrappy.

Lord have mercy!! Thanks for the heads up mate, scrappy visits it shall be!

Still gotta go to see VW for some part numbers coz i wanna compare them to see what parts are shared between PD100 & PD130...

Anyone got a PD130 they wanna give me their reg no or chassis no please? PM me :)

The law firm i manage (www.tjlsolicitors.co.uk) is registered with the ICO, and i am also the DPO for the firm so you can be assured i will treat your information highly sensitively and destroy appropriately once i'm finished with it. Word is bond! ;)

i have fabia vrs hubs which you need for the 312mm brakes upgrade kit mate.

might be willing to sell to.

yes, its decatted, and has a gti backbox mate, thats all i have done to the exhaust :)

only real gains you would get from an exhaust is if you got a larger downpipe mate, so just get a nice backbox.

so filter, pd160 intake pipes (not neccessary though) and remap.

try get around 140 odd, but he might not get what i have as mine was running nearly 20bhp above standard, expect the map to give it about 30-4-bhp extra
