Hi guys,

I have a 1999 Polo 6n. Recently a message has come up on the dashboard saying 'Service oil'

I thought it was to do with the car needing a service (it doesn't i've done it myself) so i left it.

Yesterday a ticking sort of noise is coming from the engine both when driving and when stationary with the engine on.

Any ideas what this could be? I'm no mechanic!

Have you check there is enough oil in? I don't think the car automatically knows you've changed the oil so you might need to reset it.

The service indicators just come on based on mileage and time since last service (i.e. after 10K miles or 1 year whichever is the sooner). You can easily reset the service indicators yourself - not sure on procedure for the Polo but it usually involves something like holding down the trip reset while you turn the ignition on. It will then come on 10K miles/1 year after you reset it. Check oil level is OK but that has nothing to do with your oil service light having come on.

As said check the oil

engines make a ticking tapping sort of noise when they have no oil in them, which is not good

mine does this, exactly the same, i changed the oil a hour ago, gonna see how it goes, mine is intermitant usually when its cold, off to reset my service light now although as others have said that has nothing to do with the ticking...

Does the ticking cease after a few seconds? If so, its struggling for pressure, which could be a number of things, including 'thin'/old oil

I changed my oil, the noise has stopped, not heard it for a few days now, HTH
