I came round a corner this morning, admittedly doing about 38 ish in a 30. van was waiting round the corner, i braked it down to the 30 rapid like, an was doing 30 from about 10 metres before the van and past it.

• I thought you had to be able to see them with enough distance to slow down
• With speedo inaccuracy and needin to be 10% over, could i have got away with it?
• Don't think i saw a camera poking out the back, does this mean not set up
• are these the face recognision jobbys?

1. No, although they do have to be painted yellow if the local council wants to keep the money. There does have to be a warning sign within a certain distance before the camera.

As for distance to slow down, you should be driving at a speed such that you can perform a normal stop in the distance you can see to be clear. My advanced instructor told me a good case for this, it's not a "what if a kid runs out?" story, he was called to a bloke who'd been giving it some down a back road he knew well, unfortunately, he didn't know about the tractor with the plough on the back doign 10mph just round a corner

2. Speedo inacurracy at 30-40mph is only the very slightest of overreads in a mk3. The 10% or whatever varies from force to force. If you're doing 1mph over it's an offence, but different forces set different margins. 10%+3mph is the normal margin used if they're measuring your speed by following you in a car. Generally speed cameras are set to at least 10mph over the limit, but this does vary.

3. Probably not. Most of the cameras either point out of a back window, or through an open side door.

4. No, we don't have these over here yet. But getting someone else to take your points for you is pretty poor form.

if it was a plain van (no markings) with a camera out the back of it it can be a traffic survey or anpr. usually with a cop waiting further down the road. haven't seen one in ages tho

Gotta agree with you on points there. Doing the crime and time and all that. I suppose I'll just have to wait and see. I'll be a bit surprised if I am done. As I was going slower the all the traffic ahead of me. Could have been in a 40 not a 30. Will check tommorow. Will just be gutting to have to sell the GT after serching for the right one. Due to not being able to insure it.

usually find if theres a camera van around they put a camera sign up on a lampost a mile or two before,which they remove once finished.thats if there isnt a pernanent sign there

yeh the headlights has saved my arse a few times, maybe not this time, still waiting for an N.I.P. searchy post freverently for a while yet lol

What type of van was it?.That will help determine what type of camera was being used?.

Might as well keep speeding, get your monies worth.

It was a marked van with the black back window. No N.I.P as yet though lol

He had the film crew with him filming his day to day duties and he explained what he was going to set the speed limit on the gun at. I cant remember exact figures but I'm not far off... The road was a 40mph limit, and he set the gun to beep at 49MPH and above. God knows why but he did give some good reason for why theres such a difference..

Maybe slowing from 38 to 30 you could of been caught doing 33-34 and got away with it??

If it was "traffic cops" he says "Local Guidelines: South Yorkshire are 10% + 4mph"

so 40 limit. 40+10% = 44 +4mph = 48mph. anything above is speeding.

70 limit = 70 + 10% = 77 + 4mph = 81mph and 98 or over on a motorway and you'll go to court regardless of your reasoning

Do they have to be painted yellow? The one that used to be round here often, haven't seen it in a while, was just a white van with the camera logo on the side.

I do know everywhere it parks up round here though so I doubt it will catch me, although I don't often speed through 30's like alot of people seem to.

And i always thought it was 10% + 2mph so would be 36 in a 30 zone to get fined as my mum got caught doing 36 in a 30

different area's vary. i can tell you that south yorkshire is 10% +4mph.

some area's give just 10%

if its a speed van usually they have an A frame at the back with a camera image on then a camera sticking out the back with speed camera signs on the van or is that just lancashire I've seen a fair few as I've walked past them and they stick out like a sore thumb on the other hand if it were an anpr camera equipped van you would see it on the van anpr equipped and a little yellow camera on the outside or at least visually you could be lucky they could have just gone to someones house for a case or was it definatley a camera van

theres no law saying that the police have to give you 10% its just a guideline and up to the discretion of the force in question so you can get done for 31 in a 30
