Removing 6n2 power steering.

Featured Replies

1 thing I've been thinking of doing for a long time now but never got round to asking.

Basically want to remove it as i just cant stand it anymore, i miss cars I've driven without the powersteering.

But i will never ever sell the car, so was hoping i could remove it all, yknow.

i just am unsure whether this will lead to mechanical or more importantly, electrical issues??????

If anyone knows, do tell me, or if I'm completely stupid.

i know nothing about engines & that part of cars.

Peace.

suppose you could use a 6n non PAS rack, as for removing the pump, you'll have to find a suitable aux belt.

could just be as easy as using non PAS 6n stuff, but i've not done it before, so can't confirm for sure.

sounds alright to me.

i will have to ask a mechanic of mine for sure.

anyone else know anymore?

like i said, its mainly electrical faults I'm worried about, fucking the ecu up or something.

I'm not sure the ecu even monitors the PAS status, unlike the newer polos. Is the rack any different? Could you not just take the gubbins outta the pump so it doesn't pump the fluid around anymore?!

i just wanna get rid of all traces of powersteering & have normal steering.

its not needed in my eyes, because i just dont enjoy driving a car with powersteering, less direct feeling imo.

can anyone see any problems with doing this?

would a 6n non PAS rack work?

or fit for that matter?

thankyou.

I would have thought you would need a none PAS rack as they will be geared differently. Basically try turning the wheel without the engine running thats how heavy the stearing would be just removing the PAS stuff.

but if i remove all the powersteering gubbins and in its place fit a non-pas rack, this will work well????

i mean, i used to drive my exs mk1 golf frequently and i quite liked it that heavy. or will this be heavier?

Not really, it will be lighter than that - with the pump and lines still connected, you will be moving the rams and trying to turn the pump as well. The gearing on the rack, a non-PAS rack is likely to be more turns lock to lock, so if you keep the non-pas rack and loop the fluid lines, it should keep it lubricated enough so it doesn't seize up on you and be a decent ratio.

Probably be a bit heavier as the Polo is a heavier car, but won't be too bad.

i think I'm gonna have to go for it! :)

just hoping mk4 non pas racks fit on a mk5.
