1982 polo fuel gauge not working

Hi my 92 polos fuel gauge is reading empty, (yes there is fuel in the tank :badgrin:) I have checked the sender unit with an ohm meter and the resistance varies when the float is moved, however when I put the wire from the sender to earth it does nothing, am I correct in thinking that this should make the gauge move to the full position, anyone had any experience of this ? I have heard talk of a voltage reulator behind the clocks but cannot see one anyone know where this is situated?

all fixed now, took clocks apart and found a loose conection :biggrin: :smile:8-)
