Have been browsing the net for some spares for an 085 box, and came across some for an 084. What do these boxes come in, and are the parts interchangeable with an 085 (diff pinion set to be specific)?

084 is the code for polo 4-speed gearboxes. Some parts are interchangeable. I'm pretty sure the diff is still an 084 part on early 5-speeds (8p and so on) but later ones are definitely different.

ah OK, I probably do have some output flanges spare but they'd probably cost more to post than you could just get some for at a scrap yard, mk3 ones are the same (except very late mk3).

For the bearings, I buy them from VW. You can get cheaper from GSF or other places but the quality varies. Although I'd say if you can source some by a reputable make from somewhere (such as FAG or SKF) then you'll be ok, the problem with GSF is they use different suppliers all the time depending on who is the cheapest at the time, some of these parts can be pretty poor quality.

synchro rings are probably the thing that wears the most (causing crunching between gear changes) but any part can wear really.

As for clutch, people have put 170bhp and about the same lb/ft torque through a standard g40 clutch so you'll be fine with a 1.6 on bike carbs. I'd use the 200mm g40/6n 16v clutch though. It'll probably just last a bit longer than the smaller normal mk3 polo one.

Thanks for the heads up on the clutch. If I was to want a couple of flanges, how much would you want for them? And any ideas on costs for bearings/synchro rings from VW out of interest?

If I've got a spare set (would need to actually check!) then I could probably post for £10 all together.

Bearings aren't cheap, going off the prices I last paid for any it'll be upwards of £100 for the full set of 6, that's from VW though. Might be able to source elsewhere for less but just make sure to buy a decent make, last thing you want is cheapo chinese bearings lasting about 10k and then having to do the work all over again!

Plenty of online suppliers of quality name brand bearings. I've used Simple Bearings a few times. If you have access to EKTA, I think each bearing dimension is given. The diff bearings are FAG 521425 / Timken LM78349 + LM78310A. The diff seals are 48x62x7 & 57x71x7/6.5 (ID, OD, thickness).

I have some VW diff bearings which are TIMKEN LM78349 (LM78310A is the race). The VW diff oil seals (still say W.Germany!) have 40-52-9/7 marked on them. These are for a mk3 polo gearbox btw.
