struggling to get lower (may sound stupid)

Featured Replies

Hey guys I need a little "assistance".

i got my polo 6n2 on 15" Ronal R10 Turbos (realise this is too big-will get to that). It's also on coilovers wound all down 120mm @ the front and around 115mm at the back.

I have already ruined a set of tyres from scrubbing on the arches.

Basically the gap in the arch is minimal but the height still isn't as low as i want it.

every time i ask people about it i just get "get smaller wheels", not sure if I'm right about this but if you get smaller wheels and smaller tyres or stretch tyres you're making the overall wheel size smaller and i thought that wasn't any good for your gearing etc.

PLEASE HELP.

have also attached 2 pics of how low it is on the arch @tm so that you can see what I'm talking about but put it this way i can JUST squeze my car car between the arch and the tyre. :L

Roll your arches.

Roll your arches.

Thanks, 6n2 arches are half plastic and i think you can only roll metal.

Anyone who has got around this somehow your help would also be appreciated. Thanks

George.

for starters you are no where near -120mm mate. I take it you haven't removed the helper springs?

You would probably get away with rolling them and triming the plastic lip back, but if the plastic was rubbing on your tire it would ware down long before it could do any damage to the tire. So unless there are chunks missing from the plastic i wouldn't worry about that unless you wanted to tidy it up so it matched the rolled lip.

Thanks for the reply-

I don't know how to remove the helper springs to be honest. and i put the back end up to 115 because it was eating too much of the tyre, the arch is okay, (apart from being constantly covered with melted rubber) but i have put my old steelies back on temp because the sidewall on the two rears is getting very thin and the front 2 are bald on the Ronals. :-(

Any more suggestions? There must be some?! I've seen loads of 6n2's on here that are lower than mine. :(

are all your arch's standard? No rolled lips or owt?

yes, standard arches, what do you suggest i do as i cant really do anything to the back half of the arch because its plastic.

george.

Well if it was catching on the back half of the arch or even the inside of the metal part ie the plastic mud guard then this would also cause the plasic to wear down quicker than the tyre wall. You can still roll 6n2 arches dude, take it to a decent body shop and they shouldnt have any problems with it.

One option you do have is running a little negative camber on the rear using camber shims. Saving that just smaller profile tyres, what tyres you go on there at the moment?

right, now we are onto interesting ground- thank you.

if I'm correct the size of your alloy and the size of the tyre have to add up to a certain amount- the same size as the original factory fitted wheel.

is this bull shit? i have heard that if you change the overall size of the wheel it will start messing up your gear etc. (this is why this is posted in the technical part of the forum :L)

camber shims- fail in my opinion, that's all i have to say, sorry to ruin your idea. lol.

right, next- what the side-wall is scraping on- because its a wide wheel, and the tyre goes under the arch where the tyre gets wider the side-wall scraps on the metal part of the arch i.e. the lip on the body panel, it only really scraps the plastic mud guards when it bounces.

thanks

George.

by saying it's only scraping the plastic mud guard, by this do you mean the plastic cover inside the arch? If so you can remove that altogether mate.

I've never seen a 6n2 arch in any detail but i can't see it being much different to a 6n as its just a facelift version of the same car? and i've seen loads of them with rolled arches. You only need to roll flat the little metal lip that the plastic guard sits on

Thanks, I don't want to take the plastic guard out as i think it looks very tacky. As I said before I've seen loads of 6n2's with the bumper just off the floor but i don't know how they have achieved it. The plastic arches are still in, they are not rolled or flared they usually have 13 or 14 inch wheels and they are decked. I really don't understand! :(

Does anyone know what I'm talking about with reference to the wheel/tyre size?.

George.

running 13's will give you a whole world of pain

this will change the gearing slightly and make you speedo less accurate, it will also make the gap between your tire and your arch bigger and it will look like a silly roller skate unless you ditch the helpers and get it right down. doing this will make your sump sit very close to the road and you will risk cracking it, also some steering components will probably scrape the road too. you will be limited as to where you can drive and driving any where with speed humps/cats eyes/slight camber in the road, will be a whole new experience

Yea, it's already very very stiff with the coilovers wound right down! Speed bumps are difficult already and I do scrape on them, are you saying don't put it any lower? Also thanks for the technical help- what exactly will this do to my gearing?.

Thanks

George.

More tips/help please?

small wheel's = quicker acceleration with a loss of top end speed and (iirc) your speedo will over read

i'm not saying you shouldn't go lower, just that the lower you go the more of a ball ache it is to drive on a daily basis, it's your choice at the end of the day mate.

personally tho i think you already have a nice of or rims in a size that you can get looking good without it being so low your dragging suspension components along the road lol, you just need a minor bit of arch work to get them to work well with your car

if you want to go lower you need to learn how to remove the helper springs,

but tbh by the looks of your rear tyre if you did the car probably wouldnt move, also if you removed the helpers front and back you would have to have your tracking reset.

just take the arch liners out, i dont know why you think it would look 'tacky' because you wont be able to see inside the arch anyways cos it should be full of wheel :?

get a pic of your entire car side on.

Right, more photos to help solve the situation.. afraid i havnt got a side on on- sorry it's too dark now and i cant be asked to put my ronals back on just for a photo.

Here's another photo that may help. You can see a few things from the photo. It's the passenger side rear wheel looking forward towards the front. From the pic you should be able to see- The bit of the arch that scrapes the side-wall, the strain being put on the side-wall of the tyre, where the arch panels are split (closer panel is the rear bumper) and lastly how small that gap is between the tyre and the arch.

Either stretch pr camber will sort your problem out dude.

And tbh with reference to your gearing question.......the only real choice i think you have of wheels with the 6n2's are 14" or 15" as 13" is far too small and 16" is anit big imo.

So your gearing isnt going to be affected, and if it is its going to be very very minimal.

IMO just get some camber on there!!! £25 and 2 hours fitting and problem sorted!!

Its not the size of your wheels, its the size of your tyres. They must be 185s? Need new ones? Put 165/50-15s on there.

look like 195/45 to me. this is a perfect exampe of where stretch or small tyres IS needed  . although cant you just live with raising it a bit? :?
