Was just wondering what sort of bull**** Garages have told you guys when you've taken your cars in.

my old MK5 SE had a bit of slack on the clutch.

(when i was seeling it) the people buying my car asked a local garage about the slackness and they said

"the hydraulics are going in the clutch. stay well away from that car" --thats interesting considering the clutch is a cable clutch not a hydraulic clutch.

anyway the couple paid to take it to another garage to have it checked over. and the guy who was a VW expert said that all it was was that there is a little spring that basically wears down over the years and looses its bounce. he said it was nothing to worry about and costs very litle to fix. and that the guy at the other garage had no right to warn you against the car as he hadnt even seen it and obviously doesnt know what he was on about

I had a mk5 Polo E that i brought froma garage in Cheltenham.

After a few days of having it Check Oil came up on my dash. so i did. and it was way over the level on the dip stick. i checked it about 5 times as i couldnt believe my eyes. then got the chaps at work to check it. and it was way way way over the top.

So i phoned up the garage and took the car in.

When i went back to pick it up the guy goes

"Now for futture reference on the dip stick there is a maximum and a minimum"

i interupted him and told him i know how much oil to put in my car

and he says "well i can swear on my sons life that it wasnt us. we have a machine that works out how much oil needs to go into the car. maybe a friend or your dad thought they were doing you a favour"

i told him that none of my friends at work would be able to steal my keys out of my pocket without me knowing or waste their money on oil without telling me. and i deffinatly haven't put the oil in cose at the end of the day you said you were going to service it. if i felt you hadnt put enough oil in my car i would have brought it back first because I've paid you to service it. and expect you to put the oil in!

he just mumbled to himself and i left.

also i had a red Mk4.

the tracking was out so we took it to a local garage. they did the tracking but it was still out.

so we took it back.

they had a look and said the wishbone was broken

and that it would cost me over £150 to fix.

and that they wouldnt give a refund for the tracking as it wasnt their fault the wishbone it broken so the tracking didnt work.

my boyfriend had a broken wishbone on his old mk4 so he knew there was nothing wrong with it. and so we went to another garage

Turns out someone had fiddled with the steering rack and that there was nothing wrong with the wishbone.

all in all it cost under £50 to get sorted and that was just labor.

Maybe its just cose I'm a girl and they see money signs

Told me my steering rack was very badly worn and that the car was too dangerous to drive - since then I've done another 20k miles and its been fine.

Went to get my tracking done at a garage and the said i needed to get a full new exhaust system.

It was replaced the week before, how could they be so retarded? I just laughed 'Dream on mate!'

It helps to know a good garage when you need something looking at.

My dad uses a garage that is close to his work. Everyone who works there takes them there aswell and they also look after the work truck. They are convenient as they are close and as they deal with everyone at my dads work he pays off any work done to any of the cars come the end of the month. Awesome. NOT!!

He had a little truck which started having a problem with the fuel pump as he ran it on biofuel and it degrades the rubber sealing on the pumps. He had the pump reconditioned (at much cost) with different seals. The garage fitted the pump for him and the truck still had an issue. Smoking like funk and not running. They basically told him some internal engine components were knacked. So my dad sold it for £100 as spares. The guy who bought it from my dad turned up the other day. Informs my dad that they had put the pump back on wrong. With a swap of a couple of wires on the pump this guy had a fully working truck with MOT and tax for £100. High five dad. The truck had been with this garage so many times whilst they just changed random parts and generally wasted time and money.

They also did the same to his business partners pajero. Said the turbo was funked. So he bought a new turbo. Being a bit handy he went to fit it himself. All that had happened is a wire had come loose. Put it back on and didn't replace the turbo. Problem solved. Couldn't get a refund on the turbo though and sold it on at a small loss.

Basically i have told my dad just cos it is convenient doesn't make it good. They are shite. Not cheap. Basically shoddy work.

The main issue is finding a garage that gets the diagnosis right straight away rather than fumbling around changing bits that aren't broken.

This garage couldn't find their own arse with both hands.

i couldn't trust a garage to work on my polo!

I've been told the hydraulic clutch was leaking! so i knew it was a cable and asked him to put it on the ramp and show me the leak

he then turned and said "its worth a try" and fucked off.

paid for the mot and never been there since

I once had our local Vauxhall main dealer tell me that the Cambelt needed to be changed on my Astra Coupe at 40,000 miles for £350. It doesn't have a cambelt as it ran on chains which get replaced at 100,000 miles. Muppets.

haha the best i had was when my steering was off becuase i had an accident, the guy said the pinion in my steering rack had skipped a couple threads and that i need to either change the steering rack or unbolt the steering wheel and center it lol..

Best I had was from VW when I had overheating issues couple months ago

They said keep an eye on the thermostat as it might be on the way out, I said to him can't be that, because the car wouldn't warm up at all (which it did)

Just looked at me

On another note, it cost £400 to put right (knackered water pump, new cam and aux belts and new tensioner)

I replaced a front spring and didn't know about castor camber so just bolted the hub down.

The steering was miles off, and i thought it was cause of the new spring. So set off down to Kwik-Fit (they're pretty much next door), and they took the car for an hour.

When i came back, they said they hadn't done it because my bushes were worn out. Lies. The bushes were replaced 6 months previous.

When i told him that, he just said "The bushes are worn out." So i left.

Vauxhall told me they had to put £10 of petrol in my car as the fuel light was flashing. Confused the hell out of me seing as the morning of taking it to them I put £10 in the car.

I wont bother you with the lies I keep getting about the work they did for £2000 or the details of why I have had to take it back

garage told me the front bumper on the GT was loose when i took it for MOT. When they said i was thinking to myself no it wasn't. But anyways had a look at it and they hadn't even put it back on properly it wasn't on the clips and the bottom was held on with a cable tie. Good job lol.

I would have caused a fuss but it failed on other things and was an easy fix for me jus dont understand why they felt the need to do it when it was obvious that it didn't need doing lol

Its not a lie but, my car failed its last mot because of broken headlamp adjusters and incorrect beam aim, with a few advisories - cracked plate, play in wishbone etc- so i bought some angel eyes (lol best excuse for a mod ever), took it back for fitting and a retest, passed with no advisories (?) , but they set the headlight beams pointing straight at the floor. Great, thanks. Last time i go there for anything!

oh and another one garage told me mrs that she needed new pads and disks, they were only 3 months old :p

not a garage story, but, when trying to sell my old mk1 golf, i had a woman take the oil filler cap off while the engine was running, peer in to it and tell me, 'you see that (and pointed towards where the cap was) the engines misfirin'

i politely told her to stop wasting my time

One of my mates works at a renault garage, they got a clio in and he was looking for a new car..

Told the owner head gasket had gone and offered him £800 to take it off his hands, fixed the radiator hose which was the only problem with it and there he had his new car!!!

took it to have tracking done and was told wishbones and trackrod ends were knackered and would be £150+ to do, took it to another instead and was charged £10 for the tracking and told nothing was wrong,

had the 16v idling problem so took it to midland vw, they said the cam timing was out and thats what was causing it, so let them do their work hoping it would sort it, they "sorted" it by retarding the timing, i think the least said about that the better, my word of advice is demand to watch what they do on your car, or just dont take it there

The previous owner of a car i bought last year was told that his engine block was cracked as it was over heating, it just needed a new thermostat and housing

my boss at the body shop told someone thier battery was going flat because of the chip in the headlamp was letting electric out

i had a customer come in for some tyreweld.

shed been told that the whole in her tyre was to small for them to fix and that tyreweld would be better.

i told her that tyreweld is only for emergencies and even then you want to avoid using it unless it needs changin anyway as it ruins your tyres.

basically it was a brand new tyre and they wanted her to ruin her tyre so she had to get a new one....or they jst couldnt be asked to plug it

I was told after setting all the caster , camber , tracking guages up that my car was unable to be tracked as they couldnt figure out how to do it . I was charged £30 for the pleasure aswell the bellends !

I have also been told that my steering arm on one side is bent several times .

I once bought a mk2 polo off a mate for £30 with 10 months mot and some tax,

He was the the headgasket had gone on it, so i said how do you know this he said he took it to a garage and they said it was, so i said did they take head off to look at it! he said yeah they did! lmao,

had a quick look at it took for a little spin seemed ok, took it home checked it over had no water in the header tank, so re did all the theormast and cooling system, then ran fine , and sold it on to some woman for £175,

i think its been scrapped now tho :( poor little car

I got told 2-3 years ago that i'd die using stretched tyres. I've done roughly 40k since in 2 different cars and never gone to that garage since!

Used VW and even thats because i know the lad that works on my car!
